The Boston Celtics’ decision to trade Jaylen Brown created one of the loudest debates of the NBA offseason. Boston sent Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in a massive deal that brought Paul George and Mitchell Robinson to the Celtics. The return appeared underwhelming on the surface, especially with Brown joining LeBron James, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia.

The Celtics, however, might be better positioned than many observers believe.

Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey predicted the final record for every NBA team following the release of the 2026-27 schedule. Bailey projected Boston to finish 52-30, exceeding its 50.5-win betting total and potentially competing for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

“The infrastructure is still in place,” Bailey wrote in the full leaguewide prediction.

Celtics still built around Jayson Tatum

The anger surrounding the Brown trade has overshadowed one important point: Jayson Tatum remains Boston’s franchise player. Tatum should enter the season fully healthy after working his way back from the Achilles injury that affected Boston’s previous campaign. His return to peak form immediately raises the Celtics’ ceiling.

Boston also added Robinson, who could provide the interior defense and offensive rebounding the team has lacked. Robinson played an important role in the New York Knicks’ championship run, including a pivotal offensive rebound that helped decide an NBA Finals game. Health has been Robinson’s most significant concern throughout his career. If he remains available, his size and physicality could transform Boston’s frontcourt.

George is the more controversial part of the return. The nine-time All-Star no longer possesses Brown’s explosiveness, durability or ability to carry an offense. He can, however, provide something Boston needs alongside Tatum. George is comfortable playing without the basketball and remains a dangerous catch-and-shoot threat.

That could make the fit cleaner than the initial reaction suggested.

Eastern Conference presents serious challenge

Bailey’s 52-win prediction would place Boston near the top of a loaded conference. The defending champion Knicks were projected to finish 53-29. The Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat also received predictions of at least 49 wins.

Philadelphia’s lineup could include Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Brown, James and Embiid. Miami added Giannis Antetokounmpo, while Detroit retained the young core that powered its emergence last season.

Boston will not have an easy path to first place. Still, the Celtics possess a proven superstar in Tatum, an established system and enough experienced talent to remain among the NBA’s best regular-season teams.

Trading Brown changed Boston’s identity, but it did not necessarily close its championship window. Robinson fills an obvious need, while George might be more effective in a complementary role than he was as one of Philadelphia’s primary stars.

The Celtics will need health and a strong return from Tatum for Bailey’s projection to become reality.

If those pieces fall into place, Boston could spend the season turning one of the NBA’s most criticized trades into a far more complicated conversation.
