Rishabh Pant is widely recognised for his entertaining approach to cricket, combining aggressive batting with a chirpy demeanor behind the stumps. His constant communication and banter during matches have become a defining feature of his playing style. However, this characteristic has occasionally created challenges for his teammates, particularly those fielding in close positions who need to maintain concentration.

Cheteshwar Pujara, the former India batter, recently opened up about his experience fielding alongside Pant. Pujara revealed that while he appreciated the fun and energy Pant brought to the team, there were moments when the wicketkeeper's constant talking became a distraction during crucial phases of play.

"It is very entertaining. If you are in a phase of a game where things are not moving, there's a big partnership going on, and whenever Rishabh Pant is around, you have that banter and fun moments. But I used to get irritated at some point," Pujara was quoted as saying by The Hindustan Times.

Pujara's challenge while fielding at first slip

Pujara explained the specific challenge he faced while fielding at first slip during the early stages of an innings. With fast bowlers operating with a new ball, the margin for error in catching was extremely narrow. A momentary lapse in concentration could result in a dropped catch, making focus essential during those critical moments.

"I'll be very honest. When the ball was new, I was standing at first slip. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami are bowling. There's very little time if the ball has nicked and I have to catch it. And he will keep talking and asking me questions because he likes to be in that zone. And I want to focus, but he keeps irritating me," Pujara said.

"So I had to tell him, ‘Please allow me to focus.’ If you want to have a chat, you can with other players. But I don't mind chatting between the balls. But he is a lovely character," he added.

Pant's recent performances and milestones

Despite the distraction, Pujara held Pant in high regard as a teammate and cricketer. He acknowledged that Pant's approach, while sometimes challenging to manage from a fielding perspective, was integral to his identity as a player. Pujara's comments highlighted the balance between appreciating a teammate's personality and maintaining the concentration required for elite-level cricket.

Pant has continued to showcase his aggressive batting style in recent matches. During the first Test against Sri Lanka, Pant scored 66 runs on the fourth day, contributing significantly to India's innings. His knock helped India establish a commanding position, setting Sri Lanka a target of 372 runs in their second innings.

Pant's aggressive approach has also seen him reach significant milestones in Test cricket. He became the first Asian cricketer to surpass 100 sixes in the format, joining an exclusive group of only three other batters to achieve this feat. His ability to score quickly and entertain crowds has made him one of the most dynamic batters in modern Test cricket.
