• SCORING IN THE SIXTH: The Cubs’ only three runs yesterday came in the sixth inning. They have scored 93 runs in the sixth this season, 17 more than their second-most 76 in the seventh. • A WIN WITH ONLY THREE: The Cubs’ win yesterday was their 10th in which they have scored no more than three runs. They have lost 38 such games. With at least four runs, they are 62-13. • SCORING FIRST: The Cubs are 42-15 when they have scored first, as they did yesterday, including 20-5 at home. Last year, they were 66-18 when scoring first at all sites and 33-8 at home. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
• TODAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Matt Murton’s home run ties the game with the Astros in Houston in the top of the ninth and then the teams play eight scoreless innings before Murton’s two-run single in the 18th wins the game 8-6. It happened 20 years ago today, Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006.

Matthew Boyd, LHP vs. Michael McGreevy, RHP

I’ll just keep posting these numbers because they sound ace-like: Since his return from his knee injury, in nine starts Matthew Boyd has posted a 2.43 ERA and 1.186 WHIP and the Cubs have won eight of those nine games.

One of the games was against the Cardinals July 29 in St. Louis. Boyd threw seven shutout innings and allowed four hits and two walks. Something like that again today would work.

The last time the Cubs faced Michael McGreevy was July 28 in St. Louis. He did not last two innings, and the Cubs scored seven runs off him, without the benefit of a home run.

I’d take another one like that. In two starts since then McGreevy has a 4.50 ERA and allowed two home runs in 10 innings.
