Kansas City Chiefs tight end Jared Wiley spoke about his viral ‘student’ moment with star TE Travis Kelce during training camp.
Kelce is gearing up for his 14th NFL season with the Chiefs, and the three-time Super Bowl champion is hoping to compete for another Lombardi Trophy before stepping away from the sport.
While retirement rumours continue surrounding Kelce, the 34-year-old TE is trying to share what he’s learned in his Hall of Fame career with 25-year-old Chiefs TE Jared Wiley.
Jared Wiley discusses training session with Travis Kelce
Wiley plays behind Kelce in the same position, but Wiley has shown a willingness to learn from the veteran starter, with a camp clip making the rounds on social media where Kelce is teaching Wiley proper blocking technique.
Wiley discussed the same with reporters after practice on Monday, highlighting how he uses Kelce’s coaching in his quest to improve as a player.
“It’s one of those things, with him being such a seasoned vet… There’s a lot of trust in what he does… I still study how he runs routes and approaches the game… I’m always trying to find the little intricacies that can make me better.”
Kelce was clearly helping Wiley defend against bull rushes with the ‘bull hop press’ defensive move, to support the Chiefs’ run game with better blocking.
Travis Kelce can help Jared Wiley prepare for a potential Chiefs TE succession
Kelce is currently the Chiefs’ TE1, but he will eventually step away from the field. The franchise has a TE2 in place with Noah Gray, with the 27-year-old proving to be a strong option.

Wiley has had an injury-interrupted NFL career in the two years since being drafted with a fourth-round pick in 2024 by the Chiefs.
He suffered a torn ACL in November 2024 and hasn’t established himself in the Chiefs’ rotation. He’s currently expected to be a rotational TE3 option behind Kelce and Gray, but has potential to move up.
He’s working with Kelce on his blocking skills because that’s one thing that will ensure he receives game time on offense instead of being on various special teams.
If Kelce steps away in the next year or two, Wiley and Gray will hope to earn the TE1 spot for the future. Wiley’s contract expires after this season, so he needs to have a big year to ensure he’s even in the conversation come next offseason.
