Former Clemson Tigers star quarterback Cade Klubnik is getting the starting nod for the New York Jets in their preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Jets selected Klubnik in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Klubnik is starting as veteran quarterback Geno Smith is sitting out due to foot soreness. This is a major opportunity for Klubnik, as if he plays well, he could earn a starting spot for the Jets at some point during the regular season.
Klubnik was a three-year starter at Clemson and had some solid seasons. In his first year as a starter in 2023, he completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 2,844 yards, 19 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while rushing for 182 yards and four touchdowns.
Klubnik played at an elite level for the Tigers in the 2024 season, completing 63.4 percent of his passes for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns, while throwing six interceptions and rushing for 463 yards and seven touchdowns. He led Clemson into the College Football Playoff with a record of 10-4.

In 2025, Klubnik's numbers regressed, as he completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 2,943 yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions while also rushing for 94 yards and four touchdowns.
With Klubnik on the way out, the Tigers will have a new quarterback in place with Christopher Vizzina as the likely starter.
Vizzina hasn't had much time on the field sitting behind Klubnik, but has completed 64 of 105 passes (61 percent) for 596 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception.
Vizzina has also been impactful on the ground, as he rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries.
Clemson had a disappointing 2025 season, finishing 7-6 and missing the College Football Playoff despite having talent on the roster, including Klubnik. Vizzina will need to play at a high level for the Tigers to have a turnaround season in 2026.
While Vizzina looks to turn around the program, Klubnik has a chance to make his mark in the NFL, and it starts with his preseason debut as a starter for the Jets.
