Know The Scoring System
In College Fantasy Football the relative value of a player can vary wildly depending on the scoring system. This is most prevalent at the quarterback position, where pro-style signal-callers are far less relevant in Yahoo Standard Leagues with 4-point passing touchdown formats, as opposed to a league with 6-point passing touchdowns. Just four of 33 quarterbacks with 200+ dropbacks ran for less than 200 yards last year and cleared the 20-FPPG barrier, making it hard to justify using an early-round pick on any QB who lacks dual-threat capability.
On the skill position side, be sure to verify whether you are playing in a full-PPR or half-PPR league. Full-PPR gives a sizable bump to high-volume, low-explosiveness possession receivers in air raid systems that throw 35+ passes per game. A player who catches eight passes for 60 yards scores the same amount of points as a player who catches three passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in full-PPR. In half-PPR, the possession receiver gets comfortably outscored 14-to-10, favoring production over touches.
The first thing you should do before starting a CFF draft is check the scoring settings and adjust your queue accordingly.
Deploy Zero RB at your own peril
While Zero RB is a fairly trendy approach in NFL circles, it’s a dangerous game to play in the College Fantasy Football realm. You should expect to see around 12-16 running backs selected in the first two rounds of standard 10-team Yahoo 1QB CFF leagues, as teams rush to stockpile volume hogs at the RB position. While there are 68 teams to choose from, leaving a deep pool of rushers to consider, the substantial year-over-year turnover due to graduation and transfer portal movement leaves an element of uncertainty in half of those position groups.
Targeting entrenched starting rushers in capable offenses is a battle-tested approach that provides a workable baseline to branch off from when it’s time to address the rest of your roster. You do not want to be left starting timeshare RBs who play on inefficient offenses that depress their weekly ceilings and leave you with difficult start/sit decisions every week.

Study Positional Tiers
The sheer vastness of the 68-team Power Four landscape can overwhelm new college fantasy football participants. Not to mention the fact that after Round 5 or so, the ADP is all over the map and it’s tough to know if a player will still be available in 2-3 rounds. This is simply not a factor in the rigid NFL ADP streets, where players rarely fall outside their respective draft range.
That’s why positional tiers are just as important as raw CFF ADP. It gives you a clear delineation between the players at each position group and provides a template for how you can assemble your 18-player roster. Flying blind while attempting to navigate one of your first CFF drafts is a daunting task, be sure to take a few minutes to get your bearings before showtime.
Do The Math
In Standard Yahoo 10-team College Fantasy Football leagues, it’s important to plan out how many players at each position you want to draft. You only have 18 roster spots, with 10 of those slots reserved for the starting lineup, which leaves just eight players on your bench to provide depth. With limited space available to stash injury-insurance backups, and the likelihood that you will be dropping at least half the players you draft due to byes and injuries, how you construct your bench is important.
For instance, you shouldn’t roster more than two quarterbacks at any point, which accounts for the fact you’re only starting 10 per week in Yahoo Standard 1QB leagues. It’s also unnecessary to carry more than one team defense or offense, as the waiver wire will be stocked with potential streaming options. Instead, use the majority of your bench to take targeted shots at high-upside skill players who could see a major value spike in the event of injury or poor performance.
Be Flexible
While Robust RB is the default strategy in most P4 CFF leagues, it’s important to be familiar enough with the player pool to be comfortable pivoting if the opportunity to acquire superstar wideouts like Jeremiah Smith or Malachi Toney presents itself. Each CFF Draft is a universe unto itself and not affected by the stringent ADP lock-stepping that makes NFL fantasy a fairly homogenous exercise.
That’s why it is vital to stay focused and trust your evaluations as the draft progresses, since everyone is going to have different valuations and team needs which can, and will, present league-winning value opportunities in the middle-to-late rounds. In CFF, maybe more than any other fantasy game I’ve played, the amount of time you put into research will be directly reflected in your team’s performance. Being comfortable with each position group allows you to move fluidly with the draft and stockpile the best players on the board with every selection.
