The Indianapolis Colts had their sloppiest day of training camp on offense on Sunday.

WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts have now completed a dozen training camp practices and have just two left: a pair of joint affairs with the visiting Atlanta Falcons at Grand Park Sports Campus on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Sunday, the Colts put their pads back on for a 90-minute practice after taking it slightly easier on Saturday. Whether it was the soggy field or shaking off the rigors of coming out of a recent game, the offense had its most discombobulating day of camp.

Here's how the day went overall.

TEAM

— The following players missed Sunday's practice: wide receiver Alec Pierce (PUP-ankle), wide receiver Anthony Gould (groin, missed last two practices), cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. (back, missed last three practices), running back DJ Giddens (hamstring, missed last six practices), offensive tackle Luke Tenuta (knee, missed last two practices), offensive tackle Nolan Rucci (missed last two practices).

— Rookie linebacker CJ Allen (had missed last five practices), guard Jalen Farmer (had missed last practice), and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (had missed last practice) all returned on Sunday.

— Tight end Carson Towt took a hard fall out of bounds after a catch and immediately grabbed for his lower left leg while in clear pain. He smacked the ground in frustration. He left the field for the medical area, limping, but walking on his own.

— After practice, head coach Shane Steichen said that special teams coordinator Brian Mason will coach from the press box for the final two games of the preseason. Mason's left knee was rolled into on the sideline at the end of the Colts' preseason game against the Patriots, causing multiple torn ligaments.

OFFENSE

— The primary first-team offense was: QB Daniel Jones, RB Jonathan Taylor, WR Ashton Dulin, WR Laquon Treadwell, SWR Josh Downs, TE Tyler Warren, LT Bernhard Raimann, LG Quenton Nelson, C Tanor Bortolini, RG Matt Goncalves, and RT Jalen Travis.

— Jones had his rockiest day of camp, going 4-of-10 passing (40.0%), with completions to Downs (2) and Warren (2). He dropped an under-center snap in the red zone and threw two interceptions in the second half of practice. One of the interceptions was tipped at the line by edge defender Laiatu Latu and snatched out of the air by cornerback Mekhi Blackmon for the would-be pick-six. The second interception was a deep post to Treadwell, who was undercut by safety Cam Bynum for the interception. One positive play occurred in 7-on-7s when Jones found Dulin deep down the left sideline for a gain of roughly 50 yards.

— The first-team offense had its sloppiest day of camp, with Taylor dropping a pass and Goncalves false-starting on the first drive. Jones then added the botched snap and interceptions. You can pepper in a handful of sacks throughout the afternoon as well.

— Quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. got the initial reps with the second-team offense, but both he and Riley Leonard got two series apiece with the twos. Richardson also got a drive where the second-team offense faced off against the first-team defense. Richardson was 2-of-3 passing (66.6%), with completions to running back Seth McGowan and wide receiver Coleman Owen. Richardson threw an interception when he targeted receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine deep down the right sideline, but Richardson underthrew it, allowing cornerback Jaylon Jones to easily pull it in.

— Leonard was 4-of-5 passing (80.0%) and was arguably the only quarterback who generally had a good performance. Leonard had completions to Owen, tight end Drew Ogletree, receiver Deion Burks, and a short touchdown pass in the low red zone to receiver D.J. Montgomery.

— A common sight since 2020 has been Nelson pulling and lead blocking for Taylor downfield as Taylor busts a big run, and on Sunday, it was McGowan's turn to trail Nelson for a huge gain, untouched, along the right side.

— Running back Ulysses Bentley IV continues his ascension, taking a toss about five yards to the left side for a short touchdown run.

— The primary second-team offensive line was: LT Josh Sills, LG Jalen Farmer, C Dalton Tucker, RG Geno VanDeMark, and RT Blake Freeland. Tenuta typically would be the right tackle, and Farmer the right guard, with Rucci likely filling in for Tenuta. Sills had played only guard up to this point in the summer before filling in at right tackle on Saturday.

DEFENSE

— The primary first-team defense was: DE Laiatu Latu, 3TDT DeForest Buckner/Colby Wooden, 1TNT Grover Stewart, DE Arden Key, MIKE Akeem Davis-Gaither, WILL Jaylon Carlies, CB Sauce Gardner, CB Justin Walley, SCB Cam Taylor-Britt, FS Cam Bynum, and SS A.J. Haulcy.

— This was the earliest in a practice that we have seen Buckner participate in 11-on-11s, which may be an indication that he is ramping up his participation in the more physical aspects of practice. Buckner had surgery on a herniated disc in his neck on December 31.

— The defense was aggressive at playing the ball, as Latu, Gardner, and linebacker Austin Ajiake all had pass breakups, paired with Blackmon, Bynum, and Jones' interceptions.

— Carlies got to Jones for a sack. The linebacker blitz up the A-gap has been incredibly effective for the Colts this summer. Second-year defensive tackle Tim Smith also got to Leonard for a sack.

— Defensive lineman Micheal Clemons got into the backfield quickly and blew up a toss sweep.

— Undrafted rookie linebacker Tahj Chambers has been on the rise lately, even getting a few reps with the first-team defense on Sunday. On one series against the second-team offense, he stuffed an Anderson Castle run in the backfield.

SPECIAL TEAMS

— Kicker Blake Grupe extended his lead in the kicking competition, going 7-of-7 on field goal attempts from 33, 33, 38, 41, 44, 47, and 50 yards. Spencer Shrader was 4-of-6 (66.7%), with his misses coming from 41 and 50 yards. Since the mandatory minicamp in June, including last week's joint practice and preseason game with the Patriots, Grupe is 42-of-47 (89.4%), and Shrader is 32-of-47 (68.1%).

— The kick return backfield combinations were as follows: Owen/Burks (Owen returned), Montgomery/McGowan (Montgomery returned), Bentley/Castle (Castle returned), and Owen/Burks (Burks returned). On Castle's return, he dropped the ball initially and then picked it back up to return it.
