WESTFIELD – The Colts held a five-player tryout on Saturday, taking a look at an undrafted free agent rookie quarterback, three veteran wide receivers and an undrafted free agent cornerback.

The quarterback in question, Iowa grad Mark Gronowski, played a single season of Power Five football at Iowa in 2025 after winning a pair of FCS Division I national championships in 2022 and 2023 with South Dakota State. Gronowski spent four seasons with the Jackrabbits (including one red shirt campaign) and finished with a 49-6 record – tying the all-time FCS mark for wins by a quarterback. After his 9-4 campaign in Iowa City in 2025, Gronowski’s 58 all-time victories make him the winningest quarterback in NCAA history at any level.

The dual-threat quarterback logged 12,049 passing yards and 103 scores through the air to go with 2,312 rushing yards on 515 carries and 53 more touchdowns. In his lone season with the Hawkeyes, Gronowski finished 166-for-262 (63.4%) with 10 passing touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 545 yards on 130 attempts and logged 16 more scores.

The Miami Dolphins signed Gronowski soon after the end of the NFL Draft in April, but he was cut just over a week ago from Dolphins training camp. The Colts already have four quarterbacks in training camp – having most recently signed veteran Easton Stick for the No. 4 slot during OTAs as Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard compete for the backup job behind starter Daniel Jones.

The Colts also took a look at three journeyman receivers, the most veteran among them Josh Reynolds, who the Rams selected in the fourth round in 2017. In nine NFL seasons, Reynolds has played for six different teams – most recently the Jets, where he appeared in five games (with three starts) last fall, grabbing 11 catches for 101 yards before he was placed on injured reserve for the rest of the season with a hip injury. He appeared in nine games with the Broncos and Jaguars in 2024, finishing with 13 catches for 194 yards and a score. Reynolds started all 17 games in 2023 with the Lions, where he recorded 40 catches for 608 yards and five touchdowns.

The other two receivers who landed tryouts Saturday – Tre’Quan Smith and Equanimeous St. Brown – did not play in the NFL in 2025. St. Brown, the brother of star Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, has spent five seasons in the league as a former sixth-round pick – most recently a two-game stint in 2024 with the Saints, where he didn’t catch a pass or see a target. St. Brown played in seven games and caught five passes in 2023 for the Bears and appeared in 16 games the previous season in Chicago, making 31 catches for 323 yards and a touchdown. He was a former Notre Dame standout who caught nine touchdowns as a sophomore in 2016.

Smith has played six years in the NFL – most recently in 2023, where he saw just one game and didn’t catch a pass while with the Broncos. The former third-round pick spent his first five seasons in the NFL with the Saints, where he caught 131 total passes for 1,764 yards and 18 touchdowns – including five each in his first two seasons.

The fifth player to take part in Saturday’s tryout was undrafted free agent cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau, a two-year starter and four-year contributor at Texas who finished his college career with 124 tackles – including eight for a loss – one sack, one interception and 10 passes defended.

Joel A. Erickson and Nathan Brown cover the Colts all season. Get more coverage on IndyStarTV and with the Colts Insider newsletter.
