Kyle Larson Is Saving Motorsports

Kyle Larson was supposed to miss the Knoxville Nationals.

Instead, he finished sixth at Richmond Raceway Saturday night after starting 30th, climbed out of his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and immediately headed for a waiting airplane bound for Iowa.

Cliff Daniels and the Hendrick team had been working on the possibility throughout the race. When Daniels told Larson that Knoxville was still delayed and they could make it, Larson went.

The flight became the story itself. Thousands tracked Larson’s aircraft as it crossed the country, with the plane becoming the most-tracked flight on Flightradar24. Knoxville Raceway even put the flight tracker on its video board for fans to watch.

And now Larson is at Knoxville.

On the pole.

For the Knoxville Nationals A-main.

He is chasing his fourth Knoxville Nationals victory after winning the event in 2021, 2023 and 2024.

This is why Kyle Larson matters.

He is already rich. He is already a NASCAR superstar. He already has two Cup Series championships and 32 Cup victories.

He doesn’t need sprint-car racing.

He doesn’t need to spend Saturday night flying across the country after 400 laps at Richmond.

He doesn’t need to risk exhaustion, logistics and everything else that comes with attempting something this ridiculous.

But he does it anyway.

Because Larson genuinely loves racing.

And that matters.

At a time when motorsports is constantly fighting for attention, Larson just made thousands of people care about a private airplane flying from Virginia to Iowa because they wanted to see if one driver could make it to a dirt track in time.

Tonight, at Knoxville, he’s a legend.
