Commanders center Nick Allegretti has been out since the first training camp practice dealing with a calf strain. While he has been active in walk-throughs, the injury has prevented him from full-speed work.

Allegretti’s finally ready to return to practice, head coach Dan Quinn said Sunday during a virtual press conference. While there will be a ramp-up period, Allegretti will be back at practice on Tuesday with Washington gets back at it.

Tight end John Bates, who has been dealing with a hamstring strain, will also start practicing with the team on that day.

Cornerback Trey Amos is not ready for on-field work after suffering an ankle injury shortly after being activated off the physically unable to perform list. He started camp with that designation, while recovering from a fractured fibula in 2025 and some soft-tissue soreness that accompanied his rehab. Amos got hurt once he was back to work, and it has resulted in a longer absence.

“He’s continuing the rehab on his ankle,” Quinn said. “He’s dealing with soreness – it’s not like a reaggravation of the injury – but he’s not there yet in terms of being fully back and going on it. It’ll be the same schedule. You’ll see him out doing stuff while working on the side, but he won’t be fully able to participate this week.”

Amos simply hasn’t practiced much at all, missing the offseason program and all but one camp practice. That’s of concern to the Commanders, who need their top cornerback available for Week 1.

“I’m excited for him to get back to practicing,” Quinn said. “We all need it. That’s an important piece for Trey, too, …the movements, the skills, the conditioning. There’s certainly concern. He’s working hard, but with these next two-and-a-half weeks, those will be important to see the progress of ramping up hard, almost there and into that spot. Maybe in a week or so’s time, I’ll be able to have a better estimate.”

Running back Jeremy McNichols is dealing with a quadriceps issue that will keep him out for a few weeks. That will increase opportunities for Robert Henry and Kaytron Allen, who played well in the preseason opener.
