The Washington Commanders’ kicking competition is over. The Commanders are releasing kicker Jake Moody, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, meaning they will move forward with undrafted rookie Drew Stevens.
Moody, 26, was an All-American kicker at Michigan before he was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. After a solid rookie season, Moody missed 10 kicks in 2024, and after missing two in San Francisco’s first game last season, the 49ers waived him.
He initially signed with the Chicago Bears practice squad, but was elevated to the 53-man roster, where he kicked in two games, making eight of nine kicks, including the game-winning kick to beat the Commanders on Monday Night Football. A few weeks later, Washington would sign Moody off Chicago’s practice squad.
In six games with the Commanders, Moody made 10 of 11 field goals, including a long of 56 yards, and 10 of his 11 PATs.
Moody struggled in training camp, especially over the past week. He made his only field goal attempt in the preseason opener, but it went off the uprights from only 29 yards out.
Stevens, a 22-year-old undrafted rookie from Iowa, was a four-time All-Big Ten selection for the Hawkeyes. He made 76 of his 95 attempts (80%), with a long of 58 yards. He made 124 of 126 PATs. Stevens has had an outstanding training camp. He made his only field goal attempt in Friday’s preseason opener from 41 yards out.
Since GM Adam Peters arrived in 2024, Stevens will be the eighth kicker the Commanders have used in a regular-season game.
