Here's the unfortunate reality of Tyler Loop's young NFL career. For all intents and purposes, his rookie season wasn't bad. In fact, when viewed objectively, it was fairly solid. Yet when Baltimore Ravens fans discuss him, statistics rarely dominate the conversation.

Instead, minds immediately drift back to one kick. The final miss... Loop's 44-yard field goal attempt against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18 sailed wide right, ending Baltimore's playoff hopes and sending its AFC North rival into the postseason instead.

Fair or not, that moment has become attached to his reputation. It's the type of play that is certain to live on in rivalry broadcasts, hype videos, and season retrospectives. Every time the Ravens and Steelers meet, there's a good chance viewers will see that kick again as television networks revisit one of the defining moments of their feud.

Loop has since spoken publicly about the miss. He stated that he has moved on from it. Perhaps everyone else should too. The problem is that football has a way of reopening old conversations.

During Baltimore's preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, Loop was given his first field goal opportunity of the summer. The result felt eerily familiar. His 49-yard attempt missed wide right, immediately reviving questions about whether the Ravens can trust their kicker when the pressure mounts. It was only a preseason kick, but kickers occupy a unique place in the NFL. Every make, and every miss tends to carry more weight than it should, particularly when previous misses remain fresh in everyone's memory.

Another Tyler Loop miss reignites familiar discussions

Head coach Jesse Minter struck a measured tone after the game. Rather than overreacting, Minter indicated the coaching staff would review the operation and examine the tape to determine whether there were any correctable issues.

The operation itself deserves some context. As Minter mentions, Saturday marked Ryan Eckley's first game holding for Loop, and Baltimore's special teams unit experienced a rocky opening quarter. Eckley's first punt traveled only 27 yards.

That created some concern before things settled down later in the evening. The good news for Baltimore is that improvement followed. Eckley's second punt traveled 40 yards, and Loop connected on his second field goal attempt. Still, the first miss ensured that the conversation surrounding the Ravens' kicking situation wasn't going away anytime soon.

The full body of work remains encouraging.

What makes the discussion complicated is that Loop's overall performance last season was much better than his reputation suggests. Outside of the Steelers game, he was remarkably dependable from intermediate range. The game-winning miss was his only failed attempt on nine kicks from 40 to 49 yards during the season.

His struggles primarily came from longer distances. Loop converted just one of four attempts from 50 yards or beyond, accounting for the other three misses on his ledger. He was otherwise reliable, making all 21 attempts inside 40 yards and 44 of his 46 extra-point attempts.

Loop has handled the majority of his opportunities successfully. That larger sample size remains important. One preseason miss doesn't erase a solid rookie campaign, just as one devastating miss shouldn't completely define it.

At the same time, kickers earn trust through consistency, and every wide-right attempt is naturally going to draw attention until Loop proves those concerns belong in the past. For now, the Ravens appear committed to evaluating the process rather than panicking about the result. Whether fans follow that same approach is another question entirely.
