Connor Zilisch Gets NASCAR’s Golden Ticket To Hendrick’s No. 48

Well, that didn’t take long.

Hendrick Motorsports announced Monday that Connor Zilisch has signed a multi-year deal with the organization and will take over the No. 48 Chevrolet beginning in 2028.

The timing is interesting, to put it mildly.

Just weeks ago, Alex Bowman and Hendrick announced that Bowman will retire from full-time competition at the end of the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season. That gives the organization more than a year to evaluate prospects, monitor development, negotiate contracts and decide exactly where it wants the future of one of NASCAR’s most recognizable cars to go.

Apparently, Hendrick Motorsports didn’t need nearly that much time.

Instead, the organization has already decided that Zilisch is the guy.

That raises an obvious question: Was this really a decision that took weeks to make, or had Hendrick already decided that the 20-year-old phenom was destined for the No. 48 long before Monday’s announcement?

Whatever the answer, there is little mystery left now. Zilisch is going to Hendrick, and unless somebody has dramatically misread the situation, the organization is betting that he will be ready to carry one of NASCAR’s most coveted numbers when Bowman steps away.

“Connor is a truly gifted young racer,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “His talent behind the wheel is exceptional, but I’m even more impressed by the person he is. When someone with that kind of ability and character becomes available, you do everything you can to bring them into your organization. We have tremendous confidence in Connor, and we believe he’s the right driver to build on the legacy of the No. 48 Ally team for many years to come.”

It’s not difficult to understand the enthusiasm.

Zilisch was being described as a phenom before most drivers his age had figured out which end of a race car was supposed to go first. He started racing karts at just 5 years old and won the FIA Karting Academy Trophy in 2020. He moved into full-bodied cars in 2021 and, by 2024, had exploded onto the national racing scene.

That year, Zilisch won both the IMSA Rolex 24 At Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in his first attempts at each event. He also won his NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series debut at Watkins Glen.

Not bad for a teenager.

But it was 2025 when Zilisch really got NASCAR’s attention.

Driving in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, he produced a season that looked less like the development of a young driver and more like someone had accidentally selected the cheat code. Zilisch won 10 races, recorded 18 consecutive top-five finishes and became the first driver to win the regular-season championship despite missing a race.

Trackhouse Racing recognized what it had and signed Zilisch as a developmental driver in 2025, fielding a Cup Series car for him in three starts that season.

This year, however, the training wheels came off. Zilisch moved into a full-time Cup Series ride with Trackhouse, and the results have been considerably less spectacular.

In 24 starts, he has recorded just one top-10 finish and has suffered eight DNFs.

That is not necessarily a reason for Hendrick to panic. If anything, it is probably the reason the organization wants Zilisch in its pipeline now rather than waiting until 2027 to figure out what it has.

Cup racing has a funny way of making very talented drivers look rather ordinary for a while. The speed is different, the competition is relentless and mistakes that might cost a young driver a few positions in another series can end a Cup race altogether. Zilisch is learning all of that now, sometimes the hard way.

The advantage he has is time.

With Hendrick’s announcement coming this far ahead of his move to the No. 48, Zilisch has essentially been given a full season and a quarter to prove that the organization's confidence is justified. He can learn, make mistakes, develop his relationship with Hendrick’s people and figure out how to survive the weekly meat grinder that is NASCAR’s top division.

And that last part matters.

The No. 48 is not just another Cup Series car. It is one of the most recognizable rides in the sport, with a legacy built by Jimmie Johnson and continued by Bowman. Hendrick is not simply looking for someone who can turn a fast lap. It needs someone capable of carrying the expectations that come with the number, the sponsor and the organization.

Zilisch will have plenty of time to get ready.

“This is one of those moments you dream about as a kid,” Zilisch said. “Hendrick Motorsports has always represented the standard in our sport, and being entrusted to help continue that legacy means everything to me. The chance to drive a Chevrolet for Mr. Hendrick, carry the colors of an incredible partner like Ally and compete alongside some of the best drivers and people in racing is what you work so hard for. I’m grateful for the confidence they’ve shown in me, and it’s my job to prove they made the right decision.”

That last sentence may be the most important one.

Because Hendrick Motorsports has apparently already made its decision.

Now Connor Zilisch has until 2028 to make sure nobody regrets it.
