While all eyes were on Christian Gonzalez, the New England Patriots quietly reached a contract extension with another key player. Tight end Hunter Henry, who was set to enter unrestricted free agency next March, put his signature under a two-year, $16 million pact last week.

As the deal’s details reported by salary cap expert Miguel Benzan show, however, the extension effectively only adds one season to Henry’s deal. Let’s take a closer look.

TE Hunter Henry: Contract details

Base value: $16,000,000
Maximum value: $16,450,000

Guarantees: $14,500,000
Base salary (2026): $7,150,000
Base salary (2027): $3,150,000
Signing bonus: $4,200,000

2026 (age 31):
Base salary: $7,150,000
Signing bonus (2024): $2,500,000
Signing bonus (2026): $1,400,000
Roster bonus: $1,000,000
Workout bonus: $350,000
Incentives (LTBE): $1,200,000
Salary cap hit: $13,600,000

2027 (age 32):
Base salary: $3,150,000
Signing bonus (2026): $1,400,000
Roster bonus: $1,000,000
Workout bonus: $350,000
Salary cap hit: $5,900,000

2028 (age 33):
Base salary: $5,950,000
Signing bonus (2026): $1,400,000
Roster bonus: $1,000,000
Workout bonus: $350,000
Salary cap hit: $8,700,000

The Patriots signing Henry to an extension through 2028 did not just add two years to his current deal, it also altered its 2026 portion. His $7.15 million base salary has now become fully guaranteed while his likely to be earned incentives jumped from previously $750,000 to $1.2 million. Add the signing bonus proration from the new pact, and you get an $1.85 million increase in his cap impact for the current season.

As for the actual extension, it effectively only locks Henry in for one year. In 2027, his entire salary plus signing bonus proration are guaranteed resulting in a reasonable $5.9 million cap charge. The following year, meanwhile, there are no guarantees beyond his relatively modest $1.4 million signing bonus.

This, in turn, means that the Patriots could easily move on from Henry after 2027 without having to absorb much of a financial penalty. Of course, they simply could be moving to a year-by-year model at that point — something that might depend on both his own progression well into his 30s as well as third-round draft pick Eli Raridon’s development.

For now, however, the deal gives the Patriots contractual control through 2028 and plenty of flexibility. Henry, meanwhile, added $14.5 million in new guarantees. A fair deal for both parties.
