The Italian season is well under way now. The competition opened on Friday as Parma, Cagliari, Monza and Fiorentina all swept through, before four more ties yesterday in Torino-Carrarese, Udinese-Padova, Venezia-Modena and Catanzaro-Sudtirol.
The action continues today with more top-flight clubs involved, not least Lazio, whose meeting with Mantova at the Stadio Olimpico marks Gennaro Gattuso’s first competitive game in charge of the Biancocelesti, and Genoa, beginning their first full campaign under Daniele De Rossi.

The winners of Lazio vs. Mantova will go on to host either Palermo or Lecce in the next round. Genoa or Ascoli, meanwhile, will face either Catanzaro or Sudtirol in the Second Round, while the winners of Frosinone-Juve Stabia and Hellas Verona-Virtus Entella also progress to the Round of 16.
As ever at this stage of the competition, ties are decided after 90 minutes, or go directly to a penalty shoot-out, as there is no provision for extra time.
