Corbin Carroll added another extraordinary accomplishment to his growing résumé Wednesday night, even if the Arizona Diamondbacks could not give him a victory to celebrate. Carroll hit the 100th home run of his career and added his 57th triple during Arizona’s 6-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field. By reaching those marks in his 606th career game, the Diamondbacks star became the first player in MLB history to record at least 100 home runs, 50 triples and 100 stolen bases within his first 650 games.

He also became only the second player to reach all three totals within his first 700 games. The other was Willie Mays. That is rare company for any player, let alone one who is only 25 years old.

Carroll finished the game 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits. His 18th home run of the season represented the 100th of his career, while his triple increased his career total to 57. He also has stolen 139 bases through 606 games. No player in MLB history has assembled that combination of power, speed and triples so quickly.

Corbin Carroll reaches milestone unlike any other

Carroll’s career statistics demonstrate why he has established himself as one of baseball’s most dynamic players. Home runs and stolen bases are often used to measure a player’s blend of power and speed. Triples add another dimension because they require a combination of hard contact, aggressive baserunning and elite athleticism.

From @dbacks

Corbin Carroll is the only player in MLB history to reach 50+ triples (57), 100+ homers (100) and 100+ stolen bases (139) within 650 career games.

Carroll has excelled in all three categories since making his MLB debut with Arizona in 2022. The Diamondbacks outfielder emerged as a star during his first full season in 2023, batting .285 with 25 home runs, 54 stolen bases and a major league-leading 10 triples. He earned the National League Rookie of the Year Award and helped Arizona make a surprising run to the World Series.

His production has fluctuated at times since that breakout campaign, but his ability to affect games in several different ways has remained. Carroll has played in all 122 of Arizona’s games this season. He entered Thursday batting .243 with 18 home runs, 14 triples and 16 stolen bases.

Reaching 100 career home runs before playing 650 games would be impressive on its own. Combining that power with 57 triples and 139 steals is what separates Carroll from every other player to begin a career. Mays recorded 55 triples, 169 home runs and 108 stolen bases through his first 700 games. Carroll is now the only other player to reach the 50-triple, 100-homer and 100-steal thresholds that quickly.

Diamondbacks unable to celebrate with a win

Carroll’s personal achievement arrived during a disappointing night for Arizona. The Diamondbacks were unable to protect their opportunity against the Rockies, who entered the series at the bottom of the National League West. Ezequiel Tovar delivered the decisive blow with a three-run home run as Colorado rallied for the 6-4 victory.

Austin Gomber earned the win and improved to 6-10, while Arizona starter Brandon Pfaadt fell to 8-9. The loss dropped the Diamondbacks to 64-58. They remained third in the NL West and fell 9.5 games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arizona now faces an important stretch in its pursuit of a postseason berth. Following an off day Thursday, the Diamondbacks will begin a home series against the second-place San Diego Padres.

That series offers Arizona an opportunity to gain ground directly on one of the teams ahead of it in the standings. The Diamondbacks cannot afford to waste many more games with the regular season entering its final weeks.

Carroll’s historic performance was not enough to prevent Wednesday’s loss, but it provided another reminder of the kind of player Arizona has leading its lineup. He already has accomplished something no player had done through his first 650 games. The only name next to his on the broader list is one of the greatest players in baseball history.

That is a remarkable place for Carroll to be after only 606 games.
