It is officially ‘back to school’ week at the college where I work. The faculty came back to campus last week and the students start classes today. One faculty member observed, “we get older, but they stay the same age.” It was an interesting observation in that the freshman class every year is right out of high school. Our alumni age right along with us, but the new students show up as 18-19 year olds ready to take on the world. Each class has its own personality too. Some are quiet and reluctant to make waves. Others are extremely outgoing and get involved in every activity of which they are aware.
What will this year’s group be like? I don’t know but I am looking forward to finding out. I love my job and I hope you love yours too.

The worlds ugliest dog competition in photos
Beloved canines compete to win the title of ugliest dog in the world.
On an unrelated note, I learned that my worst sweet corn pest these past few years has not been raccoons. I has been my elderly Australian Sheperd/Border Collie useless ranch dog. She has gotten senile enough that she forgot to strip the corn from the stalks only when I wasn’t in the garden. In her old age, she happily stood next to me while grabbing ears and pulling stalks down.
How do you yell at a dog that can’t hear and doesn’t really care if you are angry? She has lived her life and now sweet corn is her ‘happy place’. Sigh. I guess I have to plant more sweet corn in future years??
