This offseason, one of the most interesting roster battles to watch for the Dallas Cowboys was who would emerge as the backup tight end to Jake Ferguson. Luke Schoonmaker had that title last season, but he barely held it, with Brevyn Spann-Ford coming like a freight train to take his job. Well, after a handful of weeks in Oxnard, it appears that the battle is already won, and in truth, we aren't entirely sure if it was a battle to begin with. Spann-Ford, for most, is the backup tight end, leaving Schoonmaker, a former second-round pick, as the third choice. Somewhat luckily for Luke, UDFAs Dalton Trigg and DJ Rogers haven't exactly shined consistently enough in camp; otherwise, he might be further down the depth chart. READ MORE:

'Phenomenal!' Cowboys' Quinnen Williams Reacts To New Contract With Perfect Mentality Having been a beast in the run game due to his hulking 6-7, 270lb frame, the biggest area of improvement for Brevyn has been his ability as a pass-catcher, and that has gotten our attention this offseason. And when Dak Prescott, who was on the Up & Adams Show, was asked about No. 89, he gave a glowing endorsement. "Great camp," Dak said. "He's a guy that's just done everything right since he's been here. I give a lot of credit to the guys that show up every day in the offseason or the guys hitting me up, hey, when's the next time you're throwing? And Brev is the epitome of that. Anytime I had the ball this offseason in Dallas, Brev was there. He was ready to go. I think that just shows his mindset. "It shows the mentality that he worked with this offseason. Then, obviously, the chemistry we were able to create in that time has helped out here as well. He's playing on fire, and he's doing a hell of a job." READ MORE:

George Pickens Reveals Reason For Cowboys 'Comfort' In Year 2 So it is clear Spann-Ford is TE2, and even on the Cowboys' unofficial depth chart recently released, Spann-Ford is the guy behind Ferguson. And if you didn't get it then? The fact that he sat out Saturday's 17-7 preseason win at Seattle - right alongside stars like Dak - tells the tale. It was looming as a big offseason for Schoonmaker, as he entered the final year of his rookie deal, and midway through camp, to already be bumped down from No. 2 to No. 3 on the depth chart, likely tells us how this story will end. One can only imagine if Trigg or Rogers had shown more (and they still might), where that would leave him. But Spann-Ford has done everything needed this offseason, and he's been a consistence source of production in Oxnard as well, and there is no denying that he is fully deserving of his new spot on the depth chart. Why? Because he's been playing on fire.
