This offseason, one of the most interesting roster battles to watch for the Dallas Cowboys was who would emerge as the backup tight end to Jake Ferguson. Luke Schoonmaker had that title last season, but he barely held it, with Brevyn Spann-Ford coming like a freight train to take his job. Well, after a handful of weeks in Oxnard, it appears that the battle is already won, and in truth, we aren't entirely sure if it was a battle to begin with. And if you didn't get it then? The fact that he sat out Saturday's 17-7 preseason win at Seattle - right alongside stars like Dak - tells the tale. It was looming as a big offseason for Schoonmaker, as he entered the final year of his rookie deal, and midway through camp, to already be bumped down from No. 2 to No. 3 on the depth chart, likely tells us how this story will end. One can only imagine if Trigg or Rogers had shown more (and they still might), where that would leave him. But Spann-Ford has done everything needed this offseason, and he's been a consistence source of production in Oxnard as well, and there is no denying that he is fully deserving of his new spot on the depth chart. Why? Because he's been playing on fire.
