Dallas Cowboys made their biggest splash of training camp on Sunday, agreeing to terms with veteran edge rusher Von Miller on a one-year deal worth $5.5 million, with performance incentives pushing the maximum value to $7.5 million. The former Texas A&M product hit unrestricted free agency after his contract with the Washington Commanders expired. He wasted little time picking his hometown team. "Dallas ! Let's make this one Special!" Miller posted on X once the paperwork was completed. He heads into his 15th season anchoring the active NFL leaderboard with 138.5 career sacks. Signing a seasoned veteran coming off a nine-sack season would've counted as a headline in most camps. But it didn't change Jerry Jones' bigger appetite for a deal. Before Miller even signed, Jones had already made news at the start of training camp by saying he was open to a substantive trade, including moving first-round picks, if everything clicks. Asked after adding Miller whether that mindset had changed, Jones said no. "Yes, if we had an opportunity, I would be," the 83-year-old owner said, via the team's official website. "It's as much about what I think of where we are, which I'm more positive than when we started camp, seriously, about what our chances are.” He added, “And so I think if we saw an opportunity to take a little of the future and put it on this team, I'd do it if it would help us." The Miller signing perfectly aligns with how Jones views this roster. Dallas finished in the bottom third of the league with a meager 31 sacks last year while surrendering a league-worst 30.1 points per game. Miller provides a highly efficient veteran spark to that broken pass rush. His nine sacks last season marked his best output since 2021, a feat accomplished despite playing under 37% of the defensive snaps. He will seamlessly slot into a rotation behind younger edge rushers as a low-risk, short-term addition rather than the blockbuster splash Jones previously teased.
