Clemson won’t have much time to ease into the 2026 season.

The Tigers will open the year under the lights at LSU, stepping into one of college football’s toughest environments with plenty of questions surrounding a program coming off a 7-6 season.

Dabo Swinney understands exactly what Clemson is walking into. Rather than shy away from the matchup, he views it as an early opportunity to find out just how far his team has come.

“This is going to be a great team that we got to open with, and it ain’t going to be easy, and I love it,” Swinney said. “I love the challenge. Let’s see where we are, go play and see what happens after that.”

The opener begins a demanding first month for the Tigers.

Clemson will travel across the country for a Friday night matchup with Cal in Week 3 before returning home two weeks later to face a Miami team expected to contend nationally. All three games come before Clemson reaches its first bye.

For now, though, Swinney isn’t spending much time worrying about what comes later. His focus remains on what he has seen throughout fall camp.

“I have peace in my staff. I have peace in how these guys have worked. I have peace in who they are as people,” Swinney said. “I got a great group of dudes. And they have done the work.”

Clemson will also be looking to reverse a recent trend. The Tigers have dropped three consecutive season openers, including last year’s home loss to LSU.

The opponent looks much different this time around. Lane Kiffin has taken over in Baton Rouge following Brian Kelly’s midseason departure and rebuilt a large portion of the roster through the transfer portal, bringing in more than 40 new players.

Clemson won’t enter with the same preseason hype that surrounded last year’s matchup, either. LSU sits at No. 13 in the preseason coaches poll, while the Tigers begin at No. 23.

That has left Swinney’s group with far fewer national expectations entering Baton Rouge, something the Clemson coach doesn’t appear overly concerned about.

“I am not worried about getting the result. I am worried about doing the work that will lead to the result. That is all I am worried about. These guys, if they show up and compete, I believe they are capable of competing with anybody,” Swinney said. “Now, let’s not kid ourselves, we will have to play, not perfect, but not far from it.”

For Clemson, a win would immediately change the tone surrounding the program. Swinney isn’t treating one September game as a defining moment, but he knows his Tigers will learn plenty about themselves once they step onto the field in Baton Rouge.
