If you're an offensive or defensive coordinator, finding rooting interest during a fall camp scrimmage is not difficult. As a head coach, though, sometimes it can feel like you're fighting against yourself. Every long touchdown run or converted third down brings celebration for Oregon Ducks' head coach Dan Lanning; it also brings a need to critique. An interception or a sack from his defense may lead to a fist pump, but it also brings frustration over why Dante Moore couldn't get the ball where it needed to go, or the offensive line couldn't protect. "That's always a battle," Lanning said last year after the first scrimmage of fall camp. "Sitting in my seat, you get excited after a big play, but then you realize you're also upset, because you give a big play, right?" That was the case on Saturday after Oregon gathered for the first scrimmage of the 2026 fall season. However, Lanning found something positive in the seemingly mismatched play. With at least one interception and a couple of fumbles from the offense — or forced by the defense, depending on your perspective — Lanning was able to take a step back and recognize the positives. "I think this is the best fall camp we've had as a defense, as far as attacking the ball," Lanning said. "Our offense needs to see that." It was safety Petyon Woodyard who took a tipped pass and returned it the other way on Saturday. However, Lanning also said that there were some balls on the ground that the defense came up with, but they were the result of a lack of ball security rather than defensive aggressiveness. "It wasn't necessarily controlled by defense as much as it's controlled by offense and the way they protect the ball," Lanning said. "But yeah, there are moments where we're attacking it really well." These scrimmage notes are encouraging for fans excited about the defense going into what could be a historic year in Eugene. With the entire front line returning for a final year, and much of the young secondary back and more experienced, it's no surprise to hear that the defense is thriving early on. However, some may think this means Moore and the offense are struggling. It's fair to read things that way. Lanning deals with this push and pull every day in practice, but he knows that for his team to be as good as it can be, both sides need these days. It's the 'iron sharpening iron' mentality at its core. "I'm always a pessimistic guy whenever it comes to what the performance looked like, because I want us to be the best version of us," Lanning said. "We're not the best version of us yet, but we're making strides."
