Bangladesh completed a stunning first Test victory over Australia at Marrara Stadium, Darwin, on August 16, winning by nine wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Former Australia opener David Warner has backed the home side to produce a strong response when the second Test gets under way at Mackay on August 22.

Australia were dismissed for 198 in their first innings, their lowest completed total against Bangladesh in Test cricket. Bangladesh responded with 426, establishing a first-innings lead of 228 runs. Australia then posted 193 in their second innings, and Bangladesh reached the target for the loss of just one wicket. Hasan Mahmud was the standout with the ball, finishing with 6 for 55, the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler against Australia in Tests.

"There'll be a huge response. This is a massive thing in Australian sport. Australia is supposed to dominate cricket in this country. “You lose an Ashes series or you lose a Test series against India, like Australia did, and you know what the media headlines are going to be. But from that standpoint, the players wouldn't be worrying about that. They'll be just filthy and sort of disgusted, in a way, about their performance, but they know that there's a job at hand," Warner said on FOX Cricket's official coverage.

How did Australian voices react to the result?

Former Australia Women's skipper Alyssa Healy and former fast bowler Trent Copeland also offered their insights on the result. Healy described the outcome as a necessary jolt for the Australian squad, while Copeland was more blunt in his assessment, terming the loss as 'unacceptable'.

"We have got carried away with how big this summer is but this is a wakeup call for Australia and probably one they needed after breezing through last summer in what was a really big summer for Australian cricket. They were coming off the real high of that and then looking ahead to this summer and some big contests but they have been challenged early and if it does come to be that they lose this Test match, I think they will reflect on that and think, maybe we need to improve in some areas to make sure we stay on top of the world," Healy said.

"The players themselves will be, I'm sure, distraught with how this has gone. I also think there is an element of they won't be sitting in this like the world is over either but this is a completely unacceptable test match result for Australia. When you are in your own conditions, I don't care the preparation, I don't care who's playing for Australia even. You cannot lose to Bangladesh in Australia in a Test match. I'm hesitant to go all in on it, but this is an embarrassing loss and one that's unacceptable, and the people who will know that most are the 11 blokes who've taken the field, and Andrew McDonald and the coaching group." Copeland said to SEN Radio after the match.

What changes could Australia make for the second Test?

With Australia trailing 1-0 and the second Test at Mackay scheduled from August 22 to 26, attention has turned to potential changes in the playing eleven. Kerry O'Keeffe offered his view on the likely selection approach. He backed the duo of Marnus Labuschagne and Jake Weatherald to keep their places in the side, having been the players who have received major criticism.

"I think the inside intel is that Marnus and Weatherald will be given another chance with the fast bowlers one-nil down the series," O'Keeffe said.

The Mackay Test is Australia's only remaining opportunity to level the series. The batting group will face considerable scrutiny after being bowled out twice for under 200 in Darwin, and the selectors will need to decide whether to persist with the same combination or introduce fresh options. No official squad changes have been confirmed ahead of the match.
