David Warner, the former Australian opening batter, was convicted and fined A$1,500 for mid-range drink driving at Waverley Local Court on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The 39-year-old was also ordered by the court to have an alcohol interlock device fitted to his vehicle for a period of 12 months.

Warner had entered a guilty plea to the mid-range drink driving charge in July 2026, ahead of the sentencing hearing. The offence occurred on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2026, in Maroubra in Sydney's eastern suburbs. At a random breath-testing site, Warner returned a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.104, which placed him in the mid-range category under New South Wales law.

Court proceedings, as reported by ABC News, revealed that Warner had consumed three glasses of white wine at a friend's apartment before getting behind the wheel. Upon noticing the roadside testing operation ahead, he brought the car to a stop and sought to change places with a female passenger before officers administered the breath test.

Warner's legal representative submitted that the court should decline to record a conviction, arguing that the intense media scrutiny surrounding the incident had already served as a significant form of punishment. The court rejected that submission, and the conviction was formally recorded. Warner departed the courthouse on August 18 without addressing the waiting media.

What did Judge Clare Farnan say at sentencing?

Judge Clare Farnan presided over the sentencing at Waverley Local Court. She acknowledged that Warner was unlikely to commit a similar offence again, but she was clear that the broader road safety context could not be set aside when determining the appropriate penalty.

"I accept Mr Warner is unlikely to re-offend. (But) regrettably, drink-driving is still a significant factor in many crashes in New South Wales," Farnan said as quoted by Sky Sports.

What is the response from Cricket NSW and Sydney Thunder?

Warner retired from international cricket in 2024 after representing Australia in 112 Tests and more than 250 limited-overs matches. He currently captains Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League and Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, and he works as a television commentator for Fox Sports Australia.

Cricket NSW and Sydney Thunder issued a statement on August 18, 2026, in response to the conviction. The organisation confirmed it has been engaging with players on road safety matters.

"Our organisation is a strong advocate of safe driving, including avoiding drink driving. We continue to take this incident seriously, including educating all players on the importance of ‌safe driving," Cricket NSW in a statement.

Whether Warner's role as Sydney Thunder captain will be formally reviewed as a result of the conviction has not been confirmed, and the matter remains unresolved.
