Deion Sanders Called to Testify at Son’s Bankruptcy Trial with ‘Potential Issue’ Looming as Coach’s Season Starts Same Week

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has been subpoenaed in his son Shilo’s bankruptcy trial.

According to USA Today Sports, Deion, 59, was called to testify as a witness in the trial of his 26-year-old son, who filed for bankruptcy with more than $11 million in debt in 2023.

The trial will take place in Denver beginning on Aug. 31, per the outlet, and is expected to conclude five days later on Sept. 4.

During a pretrial conference on Zoom, Judge Michael E. Romero noted the dates of the trial conflict with the head coach’s football schedule, as the Buffaloes play Georgia Tech on the road on Sept. 3.

“I noticed Deion was subpoenaed,” the judge said, according to USA Today, and noted it could become a “potential issue” for the trial. “I’m also concerned there’s a game: CU’s first game is that same week,” Judge Romero said, per USA Today, adding, “So I can see that coming. I am not a CU alum or I have no ties to CU. So I don’t care. But I’m just recognizing that is a potential issue.”

According to the court docket obtained by USA Today, no official record confirms that Deion was served the subpoena to testify.

Shilo filed for bankruptcy after his former security guard, John Darjean, sued him in 2022, accusing the former football player of causing permanent and severe injuries after he attempted to confiscate the then-15-year-old’s phone. According to USA Today, Darjean was attempting to take the phone “on Deion Sanders’ direction.”

Darjean won $11.89 million in a settlement, according to USA Today.

If Deion does testify, the judge will use his testimony to determine whether Shilo was acting in self-defense, in which case he could be freed of his debt. Alternatively, the judge could determine if Shilo is guilty of “willful and malicious injury,” according to USA Today.

The Buffaloes coach did not directly witness the 2015 incident between his son and Darjean, but because he was alleged to have been speaking to Darjean shortly before the altercation, the judge said, “That conversation may be relevant” during the pretrial conference, per USA Today.
