The Portland Trail Blazers watched Deni Avdija become an NBA All-Star last season by producing the best numbers of his career. However, Portland’s offseason additions mean Avdija might need to become statistically worse for the team to become considerably better.

That sounds backward until the roster is considered. Avdija averaged 24.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 6.7 assists last season, but Portland has since acquired Ja Morant and is preparing to welcome Damian Lillard back to the court.

Those additions should reduce Avdija’s offensive workload. That would not be a reason for concern because the Trail Blazers no longer need their power forward to function as their primary creator every night.

Portland’s offense should primarily operate through its guards. Morant is the player who should control the offense most often because his speed, athleticism and passing can completely break down a defense. Lillard, Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson provide additional options when Morant rests or plays away from the ball.

Still, Avdija cannot become a spectator. His ability to drive and pass must remain a significant part of Portland’s offense, especially now that he has considerably more talent surrounding him.

Avdija attacking a rotating defense could become even more dangerous than asking him to create everything from the beginning of a possession. Morant can collapse the defense before finding Avdija, who can then attack the opening or make the extra pass.

That role may produce fewer points and assists, but it could also generate better shots. Avdija should not chase last season’s numbers if doing so prevents Portland’s improved roster from developing its natural hierarchy.

There is also a leadership opportunity inside that sacrifice. Any player can embrace a featured role when the offense revolves around him. A true leader must also recognize when sharing touches gives his team a better chance to win.

Avdija does not need to surrender his importance to accommodate Morant. He simply needs to redefine it. He can remain Portland’s connective piece by defending multiple positions, rebounding, running in transition and making the correct decision when the ball reaches him.

Ultimately, Avdija’s season should not be judged by whether he averages 24 points again. It should be judged by whether Portland becomes truly competitive in the Western Conference.

If his numbers decline while the Trail Blazers climb the standings, nothing about Avdija became worse. He will have proven that his game can grow beyond statistics and contribute to something Portland has been starving to experience: meaningful winning.
