Luke Keaschall supplied Minnesota’s only run at the Field of Dreams game, then watched another part of his night turn into a reminder about the position he is still learning.

His second-inning homer cut Philadelphia’s lead in half, while a later read in right field helped Kyle Schwarber’s second drive get over the wall.

Those two moments belonged to the same young player.

Keaschall can change an at-bat with his hands and speed, yet Minnesota’s effort to use him around the field will occasionally create difficult defensive innings.

His night also showed why the experiment is worth continuing.

Shelton Expected Uneven Defense

Manager Derek Shelton discussed the right-field experiment earlier this season when he said, "I think it’s going to be a work in progress. I think we’re aware of that, and there’s probably going to be some growing pains with it. The work has been really good over the last week or so in terms of how he’s gone about it, how he’s gone after his routes and reads."

Keaschall finished two for three with a homer, double and walk, giving the Twins their best offensive night against Aaron Nola and Philadelphia’s bullpen.

The tougher part came on Schwarber’s two-run shot in the fourth.

Keaschall tracked the ball near the wall and couldn’t finish the play, allowing a manageable deficit to grow while Taj Bradley struggled to end the inning.

Bradley allowed five runs across four innings, so the loss never rested on one defensive play.

Those are the details Minnesota needs him to improve if right field will remain part of his job.

Minnesota had already changed Keaschall’s defensive use during the summer, so the mistake wasn’t a surprise.

His Bat Kept Creating Chances

Keaschall’s homer gave Minnesota its only run, and his double created another chance later in the game.

He also walked in the fourth, and the production was welcome after a season that hasn’t followed a straight line.

Keaschall entered the year as one of Minnesota’s top breakout candidates, then worked through slow stretches while pitchers adjusted and his defensive responsibilities expanded.

He didn’t chase after the early homer either.

The double and walk came through ordinary at-bats, giving Minnesota traffic even when the rest of the lineup struggled to move it.

Minnesota Can Keep Teaching

The Twins have enough reason to remain patient because Keaschall’s rookie season showed a broad offensive base.

He can reach base, run and drive a mistake without needing to sell out for power.

Minnesota has also seen the questions that come with his defense, and those won’t disappear after one bad read in Iowa.
