BOSTON — The Diamondbacks reinstated right-hander Justin Martinez and outfielder Jordan Lawlar from the injured list on Monday, Aug. 17, ahead of their series opener against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
To make room, the Diamondbacks optioned first baseman Tyler Locklear and right-hander Gerardo Carrillo.
Martinez is back in the majors for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery — his second procedure — last year. He last pitched in the majors on June 9, 2025. He made four rehab appearances in the minors over the past two weeks, topping out in the 101-102 mph range in the final two at Triple-A Reno.
Martinez has served as a closer at times in the past for the Diamondbacks but likely will pitch in lower-leverage situations before being thrust into a late-game role.
Lawlar, meanwhile, has endured another injury-riddled season, dealing with both a broken wrist and most recently a hamstring strain, which has sidelined him since June 19. He has been on fire during his rehab assignment in Double-A, homering five times in his past four games.
Manager Torey Lovullo said last week that Lawlar is expected to see time in left field and center field. He added that he might also be an emergency infielder.
Both Locklear and Carrillo were productive during their stints in the majors. Locklear went 10 for 36 (.278) with an .802 OPS while Carrillo gave up just one earned run in 13 2/3 innings in relief, with eight walks (one intentional) and 15 strikeouts.
A day earlier, the Diamondbacks designated left-hander Philip Abner for assignment to clear room for right-hander Dennis Santana, whom the club signed to a minor league deal earlier in the month.

Diamondbacks LHP Mitch Bratt (1-1, 3.74) vs. Red Sox LHPAlec Gamboa (0-0, 1.59).
At Fenway Park: Bratt's time in the starting rotation could be limited as the Diamondbacks get pitchers back from long-term injuries in the coming weeks. But he's made quite an impression at just 23 years old. Bratt has shown improvement with every start since July 12, his only glaring issue being his 19 walks to 25 strikeouts. And now he gets a start at legendary Fenway Park and is part of a postseason chase. ... Gamboa was announced as Monday's starter on Sunday, Aug. 16, and this has the makings of a bullpen game with Gamboa as the opener. A reliever for all nine of his big league appearances this season, Gamboa will make the first start of his major-league career. He most recently pitched on Aug. 14, so his outing could be brief in front of right-hander Brayan Bello, who could be in line for several innings.
