TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Trojans know what their identity will be in 2026. Topeka High looks to right their wrongs from a 2025 6A season that ended with a 3-6 record, despite starting the season 3-1. What will it take to not get ahead of themselves in 2026? Discipline. "We've been middle of the road the last couple of seasons, and we want that to increase. Our kids want that change to be competitive in our league, which includes a state champion [Manhattan]," head coach Jason Filbeck told 27 Sports. "We need more discipline and toughness. We need our numbers, we have to grow and need kids to be committed throughout the entire season." Filbeck noted some key players for the upcoming season include Devin Ponte and Trevone Lutz, who play on the line on both sides of the ball, while noting Anthony Jones and Courtney Sanders will be players to watch, playing wide receiver and defensively in the secondary. The offensive line returns a lot of production, as Filbeck said this Trojans team will have an emphasis on running the rock. "We're going to run the ball and be more physical up front," Filbeck noted. "It's not a surprise, but we're going to put an emphasis on being in the trenches." Amongst the offensive line, senior Harley Stamper says the group is tight-knit. "We have a great brotherhood," Stamper said. "Having the chemistry will help us fight together. The Trojans open the season with two straight Thursday night games (9/3 at Highland Park, 9/10 vs. Dodge City). Topeka will also host Manhattan on Oct. 15, to make it three Thursday night games in 2026. "The first one of the year on Thursday isn't a big deal with everyone on the short week, but then it gets annoying not having those Friday games,' Filbeck said. "Our kids are going to battle and have that mentality of anytime, anyplace, anywhere." "It's going to be a little different, but it won't affect us," Stamper added. "We're just going to go out and win some games." When asked what the Topeka Trojans will embody this season, Stamper kept it short but clear. "Discipline and dedication," Stamper noted. "Iron sharpens iron, and we're coming out everyday ready to hit." The Trojans will open up the 2026 campaign on the road Sept. 3 against Highland Park. For more sports news, click here.
