Disney and F1 Extend Their Partnership Through 2028, and Lightning McQueen Finally Gets Grid Time Disney and Formula 1 have decided to keep going steady, and this time Lightning McQueen is riding shotgun. The two companies announced Thursday night at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim that their consumer products collaboration is extending through the 2028 season, a full additional year on top of the original agreement. The bigger change is who is joining the roster: Disney and Pixar's Cars is now officially part of the program, becoming only the second Disney franchise folded into the F1 tie-in after Mickey Mouse & Friends launched the whole thing in 2025.

It's a Licensing Deal, Not a Broadcast Deal

Worth clarifying up front, because the phrase "Disney and F1 partnership" invites confusion: this has nothing to do with broadcast rights or team ownership. It's a licensing and consumer products arrangement run through Disney Consumer Products, the division responsible for turning cartoon characters into shelf space at Target. Nobody at Disney owns a stake in an F1 team here, and nothing about how races get broadcast changes. What Disney is buying is the right to put Mickey Mouse, and now a Piston Cup champion, on merchandise, pop-up retail activations, and social content timed to the racing calendar. It's the same licensing playbook Disney runs with theme park tie-ins and crossover apparel drops, just redirected at an audience that already owns a torque wrench.

Why Pairing Route 66 Nostalgia With F1 Actually Works

The Cars angle is the more interesting story. Pixar built the franchise in 2006 on a distinctly American strain of car culture: Route 66 nostalgia, small-town oval racing, a Piston Cup circuit that owes more to stock car ovals than European road courses. Grafting that onto Formula 1, a series built on carbon-fiber budgets and paddock politics, is a genuine culture clash on paper. Formula 1's own commercial chief pointed to the more honest explanation for why it works anyway: Cars was a lot of fans' first exposure to racing at all, long before they knew what a chicane was. It's also not the first time Pixar's cartoon vehicles have collided with real car culture. Porsche's Sonderwunsch division built a trio of one-off, Toy Story-themed 911s for charity, so Disney and Pixar characters keep finding their way into actual garages, not just gift shops.

The Merch Timeline Runs From D23 To Monza

The new Disney and Pixar's Cars Collection with Formula 1 rolls out in stages. D23 attendees got first access at the Disney Store booth, with six new first-to-market items including an exclusive pin, hat, and fleece alongside die-cast vehicles built by Mattel. The broader collection lands on DisneyStore.com on August 14 at 9 a.m. ET, then expands to the Formula 1 Official Online Store and race-weekend retail on August 27, timed to hit before the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. That timing lines up with an F1 calendar that keeps nearly every series racing somewhere most weekends this season. Lightning McQueen himself is scheduled to appear at Monza in a redesigned livery built for the occasion, which is either clever stunt marketing or a fairly surreal trackside sight, depending on how seriously you take Piston Cup lore.

The Real Standout Here Is The Charity Angle

This is the second season of a program that has quietly built out a real activation calendar since debuting at the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix, where Disney staged a live entertainment performance at the Fountains of Bellagio alongside the first wave of Disney x Formula 1 merchandise. The partnership has since added a WEBTOON comic series tied to the Chinese Grand Prix, a show car parked at Shanghai Disneyland, and an expansion into F1 Academy at the Canadian Grand Prix spotlighting Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck in race gear meant to encourage more women into motorsport. The most notable moment, though, wasn't retail at all. A custom Mickey Mouse-inspired racing helmet, signed by 20 current F1 drivers, sold at auction through F1 Authentics for £151,000, or roughly $201,000, during the British Grand Prix weekend, with proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish International. Disney says it's the highest-value charitable item ever sold through F1 Authentics, drawing 199 bids from 28 bidders across 12 countries. A second commemorative helmet is on display at D23, tied to a sweepstakes benefiting Make-A-Wish America.

What Collectors Should Actually Watch For

For collectors, the Mattel die-cast angle is worth tracking independent of the Disney branding. Mattel already runs the Hot Wheels line and a long-standing die-cast relationship with NASCAR, so folding F1-branded Cars die-casts into that pipeline gives the toys a more credible path into serious collector circles than a typical park-exclusive pin would get on its own. Whether any of it appreciates the way vintage Hot Wheels or limited-run scale models sometimes do is impossible to know this early, but licensed automotive collectibles tied to a specific, dated event, a Monza debut, a numbered production run, tend to hold collector interest longer than generic crossover merchandise does.

Disney and F1 didn't say much about what comes after this year, only that more details on 2028 season activations are still coming. That vagueness tracks with how F1 has operated for a while now, as the series keeps finding entertainment partners willing to attach a story to a corner grandstand. F1 has already leaned hard into Hollywood's appetite for motorsport storytelling, and pairing with Disney's consumer products arm is a lower-risk, higher-frequency version of the same strategy. Instead of one movie, F1 gets a rotating cast of Disney characters showing up in gift shops for years at a time. Judged purely as a brand deal, it's a smart way for both sides to stay in front of families who will never watch a full ninety-minute broadcast but will absolutely buy a Lightning McQueen keychain shaped like a steering wheel.
