The Los Angeles Dodgers showed what they’re capable of against the Colorado Rockies on Monday, exploding for 11 runs amid a poor run of form. The Dodgers hadn’t scored more than 10 runs since the beginning of July, and the thin air in Coors Field may have helped them out in rediscovering their World Series champion potential. They hit three homers on the day—two coming off of Shohei Ohtani’s bat—but manager Dave Roberts said Max Muncy’s 461-foot blast showed the most character. “Collectively, I liked everything,” Roberts said. “That’s who we are. That’s what we’ve been searching for for quite some time. The at-bat that kind of encapsulates who we are is the Muncy at-bat.”

Muncy, who celebrated 10 years of MLB service time with a home run Sunday, fell behind 0-2 with two runners on in the third inning, but managed to hang in the at-bat by fouling off a tough splitter from Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano. After working the count full, Muncy capitalized on a mistake from the right-hander, crushing a pitch into the second deck in right field. The Dodgers didn’t look back after Muncy’s homer gave them a 5-0 lead, winning 11-5.

“That’s what we’re capable of,” Roberts said. “Now it’s just about stacking this.” Prior to Monday’s game, the Dodgers had a 5-11 record in August, with three of those wins coming against the Kansas City Royals at home last week. The offense had noticeably disappeared, having scored four runs or less in each of their four games against the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. Other than Ohtani and Muncy’s strong performances, plenty of other Dodgers stepped up to carry them over the Rockies in the series opener. Freddie Freeman had a strong showing for the Dodgers, snapping an 18-game stretch during which he didn’t have an extra-base hit. The first baseman went 3-for-5 with two doubles and also crossed the plate twice.

Andy Pages had a similarly solid game, recording three hits and driving in two runs of his own. Blake Snell also gave the offense the opportunity to take control of the game with his strong performance, logging six more innings and striking out five while only allowing one run despite a shaky third inning. The Dodgers finally came together and performed up to standard against the Rockies, and will look to do so once more in the second game of the series Tuesday at 5:40 p.m. PT.
