On Tuesday, it was revealed that Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz is going to be placed on the injured list due to neck inflammation. Manager Dave Roberts shared an update on the situation and later revealed whether or not the closer is expected to pitch again this season.
“I just ran into Edwin on the way out,” Roberts told reporters before Tuesday night’s game between the Dodgers and Rockies in Colorado via SportsNet LA. “He is heading back to LA. He has neck inflammation. Doctor Watkins back home is going to check him out tomorrow morning… It’s kind of something that he felt last night.
“We don’t know if it’s something that has been there the last, call it week or whatever, but it kind of showed its head last night. So we’re going to kind of address it.”

So, will Diaz pitch again in 2026?
“We will know more after seeing Dr. Watkins, but given kind of where he’s at, I don’t see a situation where he’d be out for the year,” Roberts said.
Barring unforeseen circumstances, it seems as if Diaz will indeed return at some point this season. Could it be right before the postseason? Will it be in a couple of weeks? Only time will tell. It seems as if the Dodgers will provide further updates on a potential timeline on Wednesday.
Diaz has struggled in recent action but perhaps he will bounce back once he returns from the IL. He is one of the best closers in the game when he is going right on the mound.
As for the Dodgers’ game on Tuesday night, first pitch is scheduled for 8:40 PM ET in Colorado.
