Dodgers' Dave Roberts goes off about potential Edwin Diaz replacement after another blown save originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Dodgers made one of the biggest signings of the offseason once again this past winter, bringing in former New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz. However, the veteran closer suffered an injury early in the season, putting a damper on his first year in Los Angeles. Díaz has been one of the best closers in baseball for several years. After missing time with an injury, he returned to the Dodgers at the end of July. “In a coincidence that couldn't have aligned better, Edwin Díaz was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday night -- just in time for his very first bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium,” MLB.com’s Courtney Hollmon wrote. With Díaz back in the bullpen, the Dodgers expected their already talented pitching staff to become even more dangerous. Instead, it has been a nightmare for the closer since his return. On Friday night, Díaz blew a save against the Milwaukee Brewers, marking the third blown save in his last four opportunities. “Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz, who has blown his third save in his last four opportunities, is yanked from the game after blowing a 4-2 lead. Dodgers 4, Brewers 4 (9th inning),” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote. The Dodgers closer was booed as he walked off the field, which is a position no player wants to be in. His recent struggles have raised questions about whether Los Angeles should consider finding a new closer. When Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked about potentially making a change, he made it clear that there is not an obvious replacement waiting in the bullpen. “Give me another option,” Roberts said. “I can't just say change in low leverage. I have to have other options and to be quite honest, none of those guys have really thrown the baseball great.” Roberts' statement shows just how questionable the Dodgers' bullpen has been throughout the season. It also makes it clear that, despite Díaz's recent struggles, Roberts is going to stick with his closer until another legitimate option emerges. Even with Díaz's latest struggles, he remains one of the most accomplished closers in baseball. Roberts knows what Díaz is capable of and understands that he remains one of the biggest weapons in the Dodgers' bullpen. Unless another reliever steps up and gives Roberts a legitimate alternative, Díaz's job appears to be safe. More MLB news:
