The Miami Dolphins are back at it Monday and prepare for joint practice and a preseason game against the New York Giants this week. One note from practice by reporters on-site was that rookie fourth-round pick Kyle Louis is seeing time at safety. Drafted and listed as a linebacker, there's no surprise that Louis is getting safety reps. This had been teased and foreshadowed by head coach Jeff Hafley, as early as April following the draft. Hafley told media following the selection of Louis, in regard to the defensive backfield, “I know he's listed as a linebacker, but I think you're going to see him move around and do some things back there as well.” Louis showed his versatility in college at Pittsburgh, and his leadership and coachability make him a potential “star” as a hybrid linebacker and defensive back. Spending four years at Pittsburgh, he eased into his field time and over the last two seasons was statistically stellar and a team captain. From 2024-25, he totaled 182 tackles (24 for loss), 10 sacks, six interceptions (including a touchdown) and six pass breakups. He also added two forced fumbles and two recoveries. During Miami’s 20-7 loss to the Washington Commanders last Friday, Louis made three tackles, two being solo. On Monday, Louis addressed the media after practice and his usage at safety, saying, "I’m always ready for my number to be called for anything.” Louis added, “Coach Hafley just pulled me over yesterday and just said, ‘Hey man, ready for a bigger role?’” The rookie indicated that Hafley said there are plans for him and he wants to use him right. Louis described his opportunity, saying that he “definitely just been feeling good about the indie reps and team reps, and it just felt good playing in space at my speed.” Louis could work his way into a key role in Hafley’s defense, which values attributes like positional flexibility and the ability to handle multiple jobs.
