The Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team has added another historic chapter to its powerhouse legacy. Las Reinas del Caribe, or the Queens of the Caribbean, captured the women’s volleyball gold medal at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, defeating Colombia in straight sets on August 7.

But this was not simply another championship for one of the region’s most successful teams. The victory made the Dominican Republic the most successful women’s volleyball nation in the history of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

The Dominican volleyball team defeated Colombia 3-0, winning 25-19, 25-19 and 25-21 in the championship match at the Ricardo Gioriver Arias Volleyball Palace. The win gave the Dominican Republic its seventh consecutive women’s volleyball gold medal at the Games and its ninth gold overall, moving the country ahead of Cuba, which has eight titles.

For a team that has spent years building an international reputation, making history at home made the moment even bigger.

Dominican Volleyball Team Wins Historic Ninth Gold Medal

The Dominican Republic entered the final with an opportunity to do something no other women’s volleyball program had accomplished at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

According to NORCECA, the ninth gold medal pushed the Dominican Republic past Cuba on the all-time list. In addition to its nine gold medals, the Dominican Republic has collected one silver and four bronze medals in the women’s volleyball competition.

The championship also extended an extraordinary streak. The Dominican Republic has now won seven consecutive Central American and Caribbean Games women's volleyball titles. The country's current championship run began in 2002, when it won gold in San Salvador, and continued through Cartagena 2006, Mayagüez 2010, Veracruz 2014, Barranquilla 2018, San Salvador 2023 and now Santo Domingo 2026.

Historical tournament records show that Cuba previously won seven consecutive titles from 1966 through 1993.

That means the Queens of the Caribbean have matched one of the competition's most imposing championship streaks while taking sole possession of the record for total gold medals.

How the Dominican Republic Beat Colombia in the 2026 Final

The Dominican team controlled the gold-medal match early. Strong serving and play at the net helped the hosts take the first set 25-19. The second followed a similar pattern, with the Dominican Republic pulling away as the set progressed and posting another 25-19 win.

Colombia pushed harder in the third. The teams were tied 14-14 before the Dominican Republic created separation late in the set. The hosts moved ahead 23-20 and eventually reached championship point at 24-21. Then came the history-making finish.

Jineiry Martínez delivered a block against Colombia's Laura Olaya to close the third set 25-21 and secure the championship in front of the home crowd.

The statistics showed just how important the Dominican Republic's work at the net and service line had been. The team held a 12-5 advantage in blocks and an 8-2 edge in aces. Colombia actually had a narrow 35-34 advantage in attacks, but the Dominican team found other ways to control the match.

Yonkaira Peña and Gaila González Lead the Queens of the Caribbean

Yonkaira Peña led the Dominican Republic with 16 points in the final, while Gaila González added 13. Colombia's Ivonne Montaño finished with 14 points.

For Colombia, the silver medal was also significant. It marked only the country's second women's volleyball medal in Central American and Caribbean Games history. Both medals have been silver, and both championship-match losses came against the Dominican Republic.

For the Dominican players, however, this tournament represented another demonstration of the consistency that has transformed Las Reinas del Caribe into one of the country's most recognizable sports teams.

Dominican Republic is a Volleyball Nation

The ninth Central American and Caribbean Games gold is part of a much larger story. The Dominican Republic women's national team has become a consistent presence in major international volleyball competitions. FIVB has highlighted the country's recent achievements, including NORCECA Championship gold medals in 2021 and 2023 and qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the 2022 and 2025 FIVB Women's World Championships.

The program has also received substantial international development support. Since 2021, FIVB has invested more than $1 million through its Volleyball Empowerment coach-support project for the Dominican Republic women's team, with Brazilian coach Marcos Kwiek continuing to lead the national squad.

Recent results suggest that investment has accompanied sustained success. In 2025, the Dominican Republic went undefeated at the Women's Pan American Cup in Colima, Mexico, defeating Colombia 3-0 in the final to take another international title.

Now, the Queens of the Caribbean have another record attached to their name.

Las Reinas del Caribe Make History on Home Soil

Santo Domingo hosted the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games as the competition celebrated its centennial edition. The Games ran from July 24 through August 8 and brought thousands of athletes from across the region to the Dominican capital.

Winning the record-breaking ninth volleyball gold medal in Santo Domingo gave the Dominican team the chance to make history in front of its own supporters. NORCECA reported a packed Volleyball Palace for the final, with the crowd supporting the Queens of the Caribbean as they completed the sweep.

It was a fitting setting for a milestone decades in the making.

The Dominican Republic is no longer chasing the most successful women's volleyball record in Central American and Caribbean Games history. It owns it.
