The top quarterback in Michigan high school football has made up his mind about his college destination. Detroit Cass Tech junior quarterback Donald Tabron II verbally committed to Texas A&M on Saturday, Aug. 15, at a commitment event in Detroit. He picked the Aggies over fellow finalists Oregon and LSU. Tabron, Michigan's top quarterback, is rated a five-star recruit and the No. 29 overall prospect nationally in the 2028 recruiting class, according to 247 Sports' composite rankings. Tabron announced his commitment 13 days ahead of the Technicians' season opener on Aug. 28 against Michigan City (Ind.) in the Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State. He is the latest high-profile quarterback recruit to announce a college decision entering the junior season, allowing him to turn his full attention to going for his second state championship ring in three years.
In his two years with the Technicians, Tabron has amassed a 23-1 record since taking over as the starting quarterback midway through his freshman season. He has led Cass to consecutive Detroit Public School League titles over Detroit King, the 2024 Division 1 state championship and a 23-game winning streak that ended with Cass' 2025 Division 1 runner-up finish. [ 2 of nation's best sophomores go 'books and then ball' at Cass Tech ] The 6-foot-4, 200-pound junior threw for 2,819 yards and 35 touchdowns in 2025, bringing his two-year totals to 4,502 yards and 52 touchdowns. Tabron has a deep understanding of Cass' offense and knows how to attack and manipulate defenses from the pocket. He keeps the offense on schedule thanks to great timing with his receivers on short and intermediate routes, while having enough of a cannon to take the top off a defense.
Tabron has continued to grow as a vocal leader year by year and will shoulder more responsibility in 2026 after his top two targets, C.J. Sadler (North Carolina) and Will Sykes Jr. (Ferris State), graduate. The summer has focused on building a rapport with his new top guy. Academically, Tabron has been preparing for the next level since his first day at Cass. He has been an honors student throughout his high school tenure, and plans on taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses over his final two years at Cass so he can enroll early at Texas A&M. Tabron joins an Aggies program fresh off its first appearance in the College Football Playoff and the top recruiting class in 2027. The program's positive direction under coach Mike Elko, Tabron's relationship with new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch and the ongoing success of current quarterback Marcel Reed were three big selling points in the Aggies' favor. The Aggies have now landed two verbal commitments from top Michigan players in consecutive recruiting classes. Tabron will join Texas A&M one year after Dexter senior tight end Holden Niemi.
