Shiel Wood and his family have done plenty of moving during his career.

Starting in 2006, when he broke into the business as an assistant coach at Woodruff High School in South Carolina, Wood has had 13 job titles in a 20-year span. The bulk of that came in his 11-year run at Wofford, starting as an assistant before elevating himself to defensive coordinator in 2017.

Since then, the Woods have been on the move. Two stops in the Peach State (Georgia Tech and Georgia State), a two-year spell at Army, then one-year pit stops at Troy, Tulane, and Houston.

Being the defensive coordinator of Texas Tech football for a second year in a row is notable, considering how often Wood has moved around the country and how quickly he's elevated each program. He sparked major turnarounds at each of his previous three stops before getting to Lubbock, then vaulted the Red Raiders from one of the worst defensive teams in the country to one of the best units the nation had to offer, featuring five players taken in the NFL Draft in April.

During last season's run to the Big 12 Championship and College Football Playoff, Jacob Rodriguez said Wood was the perfect man to take over the Texas Tech defense. How much longer Wood will be here to oversee the operation, though, hangs in the balance.

Wood is noticeably more comfortable in his second year at Texas Tech, especially when it comes to his media availability. His dry, straightforward approach to Q&As led to some shorter sessions during the 2025 campaign. Players insisted that Wood's personality shines through on the practice field, cracking jokes and using his sharp wit to keep things light in the doldrums of a long season.

Those traits weren't as noticeable in front of a camera or microphone, things often required of a head coach. They certainly were present at his preseason press conference before the Red Raiders kicked off fall camp. Wood was sharp and thoughtful, playful and enlightening. It was a stark contrast to what we had seen only glimpses of just a few months prior.

Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood walks the field during football practice, Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, at the Womble Football Center.

Of all the talking points discussed on that day, one thing hasn't escaped my mind: Shiel Wood is prepping to be a head coach, and it shouldn't be a surprise if it happens this winter.

Should the Red Raiders have the same kind of successful season as 2025, or even improve upon it, and if Wood's unit lives up to the lofty standard set in his first season, look for him to become a hot name in coaching searches. If it's not directly in a power-conference setting, Wood would be perfect to take over a Group of 6 program looking to turn a corner.

Sure, he thinks stats are for losers — something he's confirmed he believes a year later — but Wood has embraced the chaotic nature of Texas Tech. Changeover doesn't scare him because, well, that's how he's lived most of his career. New challenges are something he embraces, a factor that could shoot him up the hot boards come Thanksgiving.

Texas Tech also seems prepared for this reality, elevating safeties coach Rob Greene to co-defensive coordinator to keep him from leaving to be the DC elsewhere. Seems hard to envision both guys being around longer than this season as co-anything.

Having a second year at one place is part of Wood's audition process. He's shown what can happen in one season under his watch, but what do things look like the next? How the season unfolds will tell that story, though it won't be a surprise if it leads to Wood getting his own program shortly after.
