The New York Yankees have the flashy Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base and the up-and-coming rookie George Lombard Jr. at shortstop. During Thursday’s game against the Seattle Mariners, the rookie took the spotlight away from Chisholm.
In one play, Lombard sprinted in and fielded a ground ball ahead of Chisholm, who was waiting for it to come to him. Lombard completed the play at first.
While some fans thought Chisholm was being “lazy,” others praised Lombard for being “greedy” by going after the ball.
“I don’t think he likes Jazz,” one fan wrote.
“I want my shortstops greedy and active,” another commented.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. Heaped Praise On George Lombard Jr. Before MLB Debut
The moment the Yankees promoted George Lombard, Jazz Chisholm had an idea of how good the young prospect was going to be.
“When you sit there and watch this kid that’s 19 years old make every play on defense and barrel up every pitch he’s supposed to barrel up, you can’t wait until that gets to the big leagues…watch him rise and shine as a star,” Chisholm told reporters last year.

Chisholm was proven correct as Lombard homered on his debut against the Cardinals in a 2-0 Yankees victory. He became the first Yankees shortstop to homer on his MLB debut.
Two days ago, Yankees manager Aaron Boone shared a glowing assessment of the rookie.
“I think what you’ve seen is tremendous defense so far,” Boone said. “I feel like really competitive at bats. Just a great kid, great makeup. Great love of the game. Like that’s always stood out about him, how much he loves and respects and appreciates… He checks all those boxes. Sometimes kids get called up, and you can tell the game speeds up on them. Obviously, it’s only been a handful of games. But he seems to have a poise.”
In eight games and 29 plate appearances, Lombard is hitting .276/.344/.483 with two home runs, two RBIs, and two walks. The Yankees promoted him to the fifth spot in the lineup in Thursday’s 1-0 loss against the Mariners.
