Draft analyst's comments on QB development bring up a good point

When it comes to the NFL, finding a quarterback is one of the toughest things to do in the league, and sports in general. There has been a lot of talk recently about quarterback development; much of it centers on how the Minnesota Vikings are handling J.J. McCarthy and how the Cleveland Browns are handling Shedeur Sanders. Chiming in on all of it is ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid. He recently posted on social media about the process and something that remains a critical part of the draft evaluation process for college quarterbacks: reps. Reid shared, "There’s no such thing as QBs playing 'too much' college football. It’s why I’ll never criticize them for returning to school. The position is all about reps, reps, reps and habits. The more you see and know, the better prepared you’ll be." For most quarterbacks, that tends to be a miss; they have come off of just one successful season in college and then bet on their traits, and so do the teams. The likes of McCarthy, Anthony Richardson, or Dwayne Haskins, in recent years, started an average of 18 games, and that was still enough for teams to invest in them with top-end draft capital. The 2027 class has some players who will have similar checks to be made where they have started fewer than 20 games; it will be up to teams to decide if they are worth the risk.
