The FC Bayern squad is back to full strength after Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano were the last players to return to team training on Monday. The three internationals had enjoyed an extended break after reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup with their respective teams. It remains to be seen whether the trio will be available for selection for the match in Heidenheim. Even without them, the Munich side can look back on a successful pre-season: Following an opening defeat at Wehen Wiesbaden (2–1) with a very young side, Vincent Kompany’s team went on to win all four of their subsequent friendlies: 15–0 against FC Rottach-Egern at their training camp at Tegernsee, 2–1 against Jeju SK FC and 2–1 against Aston Villa on the Audi Summer Tour, and, most recently, 3–1 against RB Leipzig in the Telekom Cup.
In the home win at the Allianz Arena against last season’s third-place finishers Leipzig, the new signings particularly shone, with Nathaniel Brown scoring his first goal for Bayern following a stunning pass from Aleks Pavlović, and Ismael Saibari setting up Jamal Musiala’s goal to make it 3–1 on his debut. The aim now is to maintain this early-season form against Heidenheim and go on to win the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against BVB in Dortmund on Saturday, 22 August.

The final opponents in pre-season will once again be a real test for the record champions. Heidenheim, who are still coached by Frank Schmidt, were relegated to Bundesliga 2 last season and have already played two league games. A large proportion of the squad was retained, so FCH were able to make a good start in the lower division straight away. However, their spectacular 4–3 home win on the opening day against VfL Osnabrück – FC Bayern’s opponents in the first round of the DFB Cup on 2 September – was followed by their first setback at the weekend. Mainka, Pieringer, Zivzivadze and Co. lost 4–1 away to Hertha BSC in Berlin. “I think it took until the 16th minute to get over the halfway line for the first time. Hertha were completely in control of the game,” said Schmidt after the defeat in Berlin.
