Most of the recent news has, naturally, centered around Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Brazilian winger Savinho. But there’s another deal also in the works and it sounds like things might be moving. A Dutch football journalist, Joost Blaauwhof, is now claiming that while a deal between Tottenham and Liverpool for the transfer of Cody Gakpo is not yet agreed, the signs are all pointing towards an agreement being reached soon.

It’s Gakpo all the way🚨⚪️🇳🇱

Among all parties, conviction is starting to prevail that the transfer of Cody Gakpo to Spurs is becoming very realistic. Chance of success is now quite high. But Liverpool still needs to agree. Manager Roberto De Zerbi hasn’t let go so far. It’s Gakpo all the way.

That’s backed up also by Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian “Plettigoal” Plettenberg, who says Spurs are in concrete talks with Liverpool over Gakpo’s transfer.

However, as sources close to the player currently denies that any agreements have been reached.

Why the sudden surge of optimism? Well, there’s a decent chance that the first domino in a chain that has been holding up a ton of football transfers might have just fallen. Reports in the Netherlands say that a verbal agreement has been reached between Ajax and PSG for the sale of Mika Godts to the French champions. That will likely mean that Bradley Barcola, who has been heavily linked with Liverpool, might then be sold, which would likely mean Liverpool are more amenable to letting Gakpo leave, etc. etc. etc. It’s not at all common for chains of transfer to suddenly pop off the moment one club makes a significant move.

Now, is spending (reportedly) £70m for a 28-year-old (he’s 27 until he’s 28, that’s how this works) attacking midfielder with little to no resale value a good idea? I certainly have my opinion, but also as I’ve been saying all summer now, money isn’t real. Gakpo certainly appears to be high on our de facto Director of Football Roberto De Zerbi’s wish list, and it sounds like he’d be coming to Spurs in addition to Savinho.

Get ready for a potentially busy few days, if this is all accurate.
