For much of training camp, the Philadelphia Eagles' safety competition has been framed as a battle waiting to be decided. Every practice rep, every depth-chart observation, and every preseason snap has been scrutinized for clues about who might emerge alongside rookie Andrew Mukuba when the regular season begins. The preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens may have offered some of the biggest clues yet. While Michael Carter II continued to receive opportunities and several reserve safeties made their cases for roster consideration, Marcus Epps never took the field. That decision was notable for a player many observers already viewed as the frontrunner for a starting role. If Epps' absence signaled that the coaching staff already knows where he stands, the conversation shifts away from identifying a starter and toward something more interesting. The remaining questions aren't about who starts at safety. They're about how the Eagles plan to construct the rest of the room, how much they value special teams contributions, and which developmental players are worth keeping in the building. Does Cooper DeJean's role reduce the need for a fourth safety? DeJean's ability to play safety in base packages could ultimately have a greater impact on how many safeties the roster needs. By moving DeJean into the safety alignment while remaining a nickel defender in other situations, the Eagles can keep one of their best defenders on the field without carrying excess depth at the position. That raises important questions regarding Andre' Sam. If the coaching staff views Sam as the fourth-best safety on the roster, does he actually need a spot on the initial 53-man roster? Do the Eagles believe they can retain him on the practice squad and elevate him when necessary while using the extra roster spot elsewhere? That flexibility becomes particularly valuable when developmental players at other positions are fighting for one of the final roster spots. Players such as Josh Weru or Uar Bernard could benefit from that math. If Philadelphia believes another team is more likely to claim one of those players than Sam, carrying three traditional safeties and relying on DeJean's versatility suddenly becomes much easier. How much do the Eagles value J.T. Gray's special teams impact? This may be the most fascinating question in the entire safety competition because Gray's value extends far beyond defense. The three-time All-Pro special teamer has built a career by impacting games in ways that rarely show up on defensive stat sheets. That experience matters on a roster that lost several core special teams contributors over the past year. Gray helped himself against the Baltimore Ravens by showing he can still contribute defensively while remaining one of the NFL's more respected special teams players. He was active around the football, held up well in coverage and reminded everyone why teams have consistently found room for him on active rosters. Those traits become especially important near the bottom of the depth chart, where versatility often determines who survives cutdown day. The answer may come down to whether the Eagles view Gray as a safety who helps on special teams or as a special-teams ace who can provide emergency defensive snaps. If the coaching staff believes his special teams impact outweighs the developmental upside of players such as Andre' Sam or Maximus Pulley, the competition may already be tilting in Gray's favor. If not, youth and long-term potential could eventually win out. Does Cole Wisniewski have a realistic path to the 53-man roster? Cole Wisniewski entered camp facing long odds, and the path has only become more crowded as the preseason unfolds. The challenge isn't simply outperforming one player. It's climbing a depth chart that already includes Mukuba, Marcus Epps, Michael Carter II, Gray, Sam and Pulley, all of whom have stronger cases for either roster or practice-squad consideration. That reality makes the practice squad an important part of the conversation. If the Eagles choose to retain two safeties there, Pulley and Sam currently appear to be the strongest candidates. Pulley has flashed athleticism and special teams value throughout camp, while Sam offers familiarity with the system and has received meaningful opportunities from the coaching staff. Both players have stronger claims to immediate roster relevance. For Wisniewski, the remaining opportunities may be less about making the 53-man roster and more about convincing the organization he's worth continued investment. Strong performances during the remainder of the preseason could help him carve out a role on the scout team and remain in the building. At this point, that may represent the clearest path toward extending his Eagles tenure beyond training camp. The Eagles may be closer to resolving their safety competition than many realize. If Epps has already established himself as a starter and Carter has done enough to secure a roster spot, the remaining debate becomes less about the top of the depth chart and more about how the organization allocates its final few roster spots. That's why these three questions matter. The answers won't simply determine which safeties survive cutdown day. They'll reveal how Vic Fangio, Nick Sirianni, and Howie Roseman prioritize roster flexibility, special teams value, and developmental upside. Once those decisions are made, what has been one of training camp's most intriguing competitions may finally reach its conclusion.
