For NASCAR fans who watched Elliott Sadler build his career from Virginia short tracks to the Cup Series, this weekend offers a full-circle moment.

The 51-year-old Virginia native is returning to Richmond Raceway for his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series appearance at the track since 2001, joining Kaulig Racing’s Free Agent Program to drive the No. 25 Ram in Friday night’s Black’s Tire 250.

While Sadler has made occasional NASCAR starts in recent years, his Richmond return carries extra significance. The short track sits less than an hour from his hometown of Emporia, Virginia, making it one of the races most closely associated with his career.

Elliott Sadler returns to one of NASCAR’s most familiar tracks

Although Sadler has not raced a Truck Series event at Richmond in a quarter century, the track has remained one of the defining venues of his career.

His first two Truck Series starts at Richmond came in 2000 and 2001 with Long Brothers Racing. Mechanical problems prevented strong finishes in both events, but Richmond later became one of the highlights of his Xfinity Series career.

In 2016, Sadler finished third there while competing in the Xfinity Series.

His most recent NASCAR national series start at Richmond came with Kaulig Racing during the 2019 Xfinity Series season. After making one additional Xfinity start later that year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Sadler stepped away from NASCAR national series competition.

Friday night’s race marks his first return since.

Kaulig Racing continues its Free Agent Program

Sadler becomes the 13th different driver to pilot Kaulig Racing’s No. 25 truck this season as part of the organization’s unique Free Agent Program.

The initiative has featured a rotating group of veteran racers, current Cup Series drivers, and motorsports personalities throughout Kaulig’s first full season in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

Among the drivers who have already competed in the No. 25 this year are Tony Stewart, Ty Dillon, Colin Braun, Corey LaJoie, Carson Ferguson, Parker Kligerman, Clint Bowyer, Travis Pastrana, Jamie McMurray and Ryan Newman.

Conor Daly most recently drove the truck at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, while the team’s best finish this season remains a sixth-place result at Watkins Glen International with A.J. Allmendinger behind the wheel.

Now the program heads to Richmond with one of Virginia’s most recognizable NASCAR drivers returning to race in front of a home-state crowd for the first time in years.
