KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • England host Pakistan in the 1st Test at Headingley, Leeds.
  • The three-Test series forms part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
  • Each day's play is scheduled to feature three sessions with lunch and tea breaks.

ENG vs PAK 1st Test at Headingley has WTC points on the line

England and Pakistan begin the three-match Test series at Headingley, Leeds, on August 19. Both teams will hope to build up some momentum in the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

The English are coming into the series marginally ahead of their opponents towards the bottom of the WTC standings table, sitting seventh with Pakistan one place behind, which makes this series very important for both sides.

The hosts begin a new era under Joe Root, who returns as captain following Ben Stokes' retirement, with Marcus Trescothick in interim charge before Stephen Fleming takes over. Jordan Cox is set to bat at number three in place of the injured Jacob Bethell, while Dan Lawrence returns after two years and the pace attack features Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse.

For Pakistan, the team will be without skipper Babar Azam who is sidelined due to a injury to his right hand. Instead, it would be white-ball captain Salman Ali Agha. While the visitors have a solid batting line-up, without Azam, Iman-ul-Haq and Saud Shakeel will be taking most of the burden for taking them to a respectable total.

Meanwhile, the duo of Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali will be leading the pace attack and Sajid Khan providing the key spin option.
