The summer 2026 transfer window has seen vast transfer spending in the Premier League.

The midfield market has come with a particular premium. Elliot Anderson's move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City for £116m set a new record for an English player.

That status was short-lived for Anderson as Chelsea swooped to sign Morgan Rogers for £117m from Aston Villa.

Now both City and Chelsea are involved in a transfer saga that would cost even more, with the player in question not another England international but one of their chief tormentors from the Three Lions' heartbreaking World Cup semifinal defeat to Argentina.

Chelsea set Man City Friday deadline for £120m Enzo Fernandez

As reported by The Athletic, Chelsea have set Manchester City a Friday 5 p.m. BST deadline (12 p.m. ET) to make an offer meeting their £120m valuation for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

If City do not come up with an acceptable bid by the deadline, Chelsea insist Fernandez will not leave during this transfer window. The west London club is comfortable with this information being in the public domain because it has been communicated to Fernandez and his camp, who have been aware of the player's valuation since May.

Why Man City want Enzo Fernandez

Enzo Maresca begins his first season in charge of Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's successor, having left Chelsea midway through 2025/26.

Fernandez was one of his most reliable performers at Stamford Bridge and, although doubts over the player's temperament persist after his rash red card in the World Cup final, Maresca is clearly a huge fan of the 25-year-old.

The appeal is rooted in Fernandez's broad range of capabilities from central areas. Despite only occasionally being used in an out-and-out attacking midfield role, he has scored 31 goals and laid on 29 assists in 167 appearances since joining the Blues from Benfica for £106.8m in January 2023.

Fernandez's brilliant equaliser against England at the World Cup highlighted his talent when it comes to shooting from long range, while a stoppage-time winner against Egypt in the round of 16 underscored his penchant for both arriving late into the penalty area and clutch moments. City were also on the receiving end of this when Fernandez smuggled a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium in January, in the immediate aftermath of Maresca's Chelsea departure.

Argentina's semifinal win over England also highlighted Fernandez's adeptness when it comes to dictating terms from midfield and setting the tempo of the team's attacks. This version of the player is more familiar to fans in Argentina, going back to Fernandez's days as a youngster at River Plate. There would likely be more emphasis on these qualities at City, where Maresca has Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki to operate in the No. 10 position.

The diminutive Fernandez can come up short in terms of both physicality and discipline out of possession, but Maresca and City clearly like the overall package. There has been a drain of established top-tier midfielders at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva all exiting over the past two summers. City see Fernandez as a player who has shown he can come to be mentioned as a similarly elite performer.

Is Enzo Fernandez Rodri's replacement?

City and Maresca's interest in bringing Fernandez to Manchester predates Real Madrid's initial interest and Barcelona's ongoing attempts to sign Spain's World Cup-winning captain Rodri.

They are different types of players and, if Rodri leaves, it is likely the deep-lying role would fall to current record signing Anderson. Speaking to reporters at an event in Manchester on Wednesday, the 23-year-old was asked whether he was similar to Rodri stylistically.

"Yeah, I think so. I can be," he said. "I can do various things within midfield and I'll see where I get used. I'll play anywhere, to be honest. Creating things, driving forward or the other role if they ask me to do that."

Fernandez could feasibly give a similar answer to that question, and perhaps the plan is for him and Anderson to dovetail in the City engine room. This approach to replacing Rodri, if such a thing is required, feels sensible. The Spain skipper is such a formidable presence in the holding midfield position that a straight replacement is likely to come up short.

City have first hand experience of this since Rodri's ACL injury in September 2024 and subsequent fitness struggles. Mateo Kovacic has probably been the most effective deputy as a fine deep-lying playmaker, but the defensive side of his game comes up way short compared to Rodri. Nico Gonzalez was signed in January 2025 to provide specialist CDM cover but has struggled for consistency and fell out of favour during Guardiola's final weeks in charge.

In interviews on City's pre-season tour of Hong Kong and South Korea, both Kovacic and Gonzalez expressed their desire to remain at the club. But there would have to be some central midfield departures if Fernandez joins Anderson at the Etihad Stadium. And that's before considering City's widely reported pursuit of Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, which is unconnected to whether or not Fernandez arrives.

Tijjani Reijnders has been linked with a move away after just one season in Manchester. The Athletic reports Al Qadsiah's interest in the Dutchman is at an advanced stage, theoretically freeing up a spot in City's well-stocked midfield ranks for Fernandez.

Will Man City meet Chelsea's deadline for Enzo Fernandez?

Under previous director of football Txiki Begiristain, the sense is that Chelsea laying down inflexible terms would have led to City walking away. But Begiristain's successor Hugo Viana has shown himself to be a more opportunistic transfer market operator. Pushing through January deals for Marc Guehi and Antonine Semenyo this year, rather than waiting for the summer, is an example of this.

It's a lot of money for a player who is far from universally revered, but Chelsea can point to the fee City paid for Anderson as a benchmark. It doesn't feel unreasonable to ask a little more for someone who has started two World Cup finals and is approaching his prime years.

On the face of things, Chelsea laying down their terms clearly is a show of strength. But it could leave them vulnerable in the period after their artificial deadline expires and the actual transfer deadline arrives on September 1.

Fernandez was banned by the club for two matches after an interview last April when he said he would like to live in Madrid, amid links to Real Madrid. The 15-time European champions took the unusual step of issuing a statement at the start of July to deny their interest in the player.

In short, Fernandez and his agent Javier Pastore are no strangers to business being conducted under a glare of publicity, while City know that Chelsea's economic model is not typically built around rejecting vast sums of money. They will sense there is room for manoeuvre after the clock strikes five on Friday. Don't bank on this saga being done by the end of the week.

Why Enzo Fernandez transfer from Chelsea to Man City would be controversial

One word used around Fernandez regularly, for all his obvious gifts as a footballer, is baggage. The Madrid flashpoint in April was arguably inflamed by overreaction from Chelsea, but it's hard to argue that Fernandez's interview met the expectations of a dressing room leader who has frequently captained the side.

Throw in Fernandez's central role in Argentina's ill-tempered win over England in Atlanta and he is likely to be barracked at Premier League stadiums, whoever he plays for next season.

Another element that might complicate this transfer is the state of relations between the two clubs. The announcement of Maresca's appointment in Manchester was delayed as City agreed a compensation package worth £17m with Chelsea and admitted publicly that initial conversations with the Italian coach about replacing Guardiola took place when Maresca was still in post.

One concern voiced by a significant number of City fans dates back to summer 2024, when Fernandez posted a video of himself and some Argentina teammates singing an offensive a terrace chant in the aftermath of La Albiceleste's Copa America triumph. It referenced the France national team, who Argentina beat on penalties in the 2022 World Cup final, and the French Football Federation (FFF) called it “unacceptable, racist and discriminatory”. Chelsea's France defender Wesley Fofana reposted a video of the incident on social media with the caption: “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism”.

Fernandez was subjected to an internal disciplinary procedure at Chelsea and issued an apology.

"I want to apologise sincerely for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations," he said in a social media statement. "The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations.  That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry."
