Espanyol are set to be without a leading member of the club’s defensive ranks for their upcoming La Liga meeting with Real Madrid. This comes owing to a suspension to have carried over from last season.
Espanyol kicked their 2026/27 fixture list into gear this past weekend, in a Spanish top-flight clash with Levante.
The outing proved to be a thoroughly productive one for the Catalans, giving rise to an eventual 3-0 triumph highlighted by a brace from frontman Roberto Fernández.
All the while, Manolo González was forced to make do without one of the first names on his team sheet, in the form of veteran defensive presence Leandro Cabrera.
Stopper Cabrera played his part in all but one of Espanyol’s La Liga fixtures last season. As confirmed by Mundo Deportivo, though, the 35-year-old missed his side’s downing of Levante ‘due to a suspension carried over from last season, which the club appealed until the last minute, ultimately without success’.
With the ban standing at three games, it is therefore concluded that, ‘barring any surprises’, Cabrera will also not be eligible to face Real Madrid this coming weekend.
