Lamine Camara transfer latest points to major Liverpool decision in midfield

Liverpool’s midfield planning remains one of the more intriguing themes of this summer, and the uncertainty around Curtis Jones is clearly part of that wider picture. With Andoni Iraola now in place as head coach, there is a fresh layer of doubt and possibility around players whose roles looked far less secure only a few months ago.

Jones appeared vulnerable towards the end of last season, particularly as he drifted in and out of favour and was occasionally used away from his natural position. Whether that changes under Iraola is still to be determined, but Liverpool’s recruitment staff will almost certainly be mapping out several scenarios, including one where midfield reinforcement becomes necessary before the window closes.

One name now gathering renewed attention is Lamine Camara, the Monaco midfielder whose valuation may already be rising beyond what some suitors had hoped. According to Pete O’Rourke on X, “Understand Monaco has rejected a €50m offer from Crystal Palace for Lamine Camara,” before adding, “Manchester United and Chelsea are monitoring the player as they consider moves for the Senegal international.”

Lamine Camara price sets Liverpool challenge

That update is significant for Liverpool on two fronts. First, it underlines that Camara is attracting serious Premier League interest. Second, it establishes that any deal is likely to start above €50m, rather than at that level. For a 22-year-old with strong athletic traits, tactical versatility and room for development, Monaco are in a powerful negotiating position.

If Liverpool view Camara as a genuine option, they would need to move with clarity. This is the kind of situation that can accelerate quickly once multiple English clubs are involved, especially when the selling club has already turned down a substantial opening bid. Palace testing the market at €50m gives everyone else a strong indication of where Monaco stand.

Curtis Jones future still shapes midfield plans

The key issue here is not simply whether Liverpool like Camara. It is whether they see enough movement in their current midfield group to justify a major outlay. Jones remains a homegrown player of quality, and there is a reasonable case that Iraola’s energy-driven approach could suit him far better than the role he was handed at points last season.

Yet elite clubs do not wait for uncertainty to resolve itself. They prepare for every outcome. If there is a serious chance that Jones moves on, Liverpool would need to be ready with a replacement profile, and Camara appears to fit the age bracket and upside they typically value.

There is also the broader squad-building context. Spending more than €50m on one midfielder can only happen if Liverpool are comfortable with the rest of their transfer priorities. Recruitment rarely happens in isolation, and the final weeks of the window often become a balancing act between immediate needs and long-term opportunity.

Race for Monaco midfielder could intensify

Camara’s situation now looks like one to watch closely. Liverpool may or may not proceed, but the market signal is clear. Monaco are holding firm, Premier League clubs are circling, and the eventual fee could climb further if competition hardens.

For Liverpool, much may depend on what they decide about Jones and how aggressively they want to reshape midfield under Iraola. If Camara is viewed as the right fit, they may need to act decisively and accept that this is a deal unlikely to be completed on the cheap.

Our View

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this report immediately raises two feelings, curiosity and caution. Camara sounds like the sort of player who could genuinely refresh the midfield, especially if Iraola wants more intensity, mobility and bite in central areas. At 22, with top-level experience already behind him, he fits the profile of a signing who could grow quickly at Anfield.

That said, many fans will probably wonder why the conversation has to begin with finding a Curtis Jones successor at all. Jones is one of our own, technically strong, tactically intelligent and capable of influencing matches when trusted in the right role. If Iraola can unlock him properly, Liverpool may already have a solution in-house.

The bigger question is value. Paying over €50m for Camara could prove smart in time, but only if Liverpool are convinced he upgrades the squad rather than simply adds another body to a crowded midfield department. Supporters will want to see a clear plan, not another season of shuffling roles and hoping combinations click.

Still, there is enough in this update to be intrigued. If Palace have already seen €50m knocked back, Camara is clearly a serious talent. Should Liverpool enter the race, it would suggest they believe he can become a major figure in the next era of the side. That is the part that makes this one worth watching.
