Great Britain lead the medal table at the European Athletics Championships 2026 after a thrilling first three days of competition, with Matthew Hudson-Smith winning a third European 400m title on Wednesday night to become the joint-most decorated man in Europe of all time.
The Wolverhampton native won his eighth medal at the championships on his childhood track, adding to golds won by sprinters Romell Glave and Amy Hunt in the 100m earlier this week.
GB have three golds and three silvers so far, with rising star Emily Newnham winning silver in the 400m hurdles shortly after Hudson-Smith’s triumph.
Welsh sprinter Jeremiah Azu picked up silver respectively in the men’s 100m as Britain took the top two steps on the podium, while the 4x400m mixed relay team also took silver on the opening night of competition, led home by Yemi Mary John.
Italy and the Netherlands are close behind GB on five medals apiece while Norway are just behind having also won two golds so far, with Jakob Ingebrigtsen claiming a brilliant 5,000m gold after nearly a year out of competition with an Achilles injury which required surgery in January. He only returned to full training six weeks ago, but stunned his rivals in the final 100m - after appearing completely boxed in - to win a record-equalling seventh European gold.
