No. 18 Tennessee held its first football scrimmage in fall training camp on Saturday. Rankings reflect the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. “Good work today inside the stadium,” Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said after Saturday's scrimmage. “Scrimmage, a lot of situational football, from special teams to different field zones, offense and defense. A lot of really good work. Some things that, obviously, we got to continue to clean up. Some young guys that did some really good things, but some young guys that got to continue to grow and be ready to play championship level football here as you get ready to play this season. “A lot of positives, but we got to continue to grow here. A lot of work left here in the next three weeks to get ready to go play." The Vols have a starting quarterback competition during fall camp with sophomore George MacIntyre and freshman Faizon Brandon. Heupel discussed Tennessee's starting quarterback competition following Saturday's scrimmage at Neyland Stadium. Everything the sixth-year head coach said is listed below. On his evaluation of George MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon in the scrimmage setting "Today, couple communication, just handling some things early in the scrimmage that I think we can improve upon. I thought as the scrimmage went on, both played at a really high level. Made some plays down the field. Worked through their progressions, you know, we worked four minute today. Some things we can learn in that. "All in all, a positive day. Both of those guys have had good training camps. In general, they've taken really good care of the football. They've continued to grow and mastering what we're doing, and the control and command that you have to have at the quarterback position, but for both of them, just like our football team, there's a lot of growth to be ready to go play Week 1." On the competitiveness of the quarterback competition "I like the growth from both of those guys. They've had really positive days, positive plays. They've all had one that they probably would do a little bit different. The fundamentals and technique continue to get better, understanding of what we're doing. I just want to see them continue to grow here over the next couple weeks." On not making the same mistake twice and how that has applied to the quarterbacks "I feel like those guys have continued to grow. The multiple looks that they see from our defense in drop back, and play action, and our run game, RPO game, they continue to take a lot of steps and are doing some really good things in the decision-making process." On if he feels things are any clearer after the first scrimmage in the quarterback battle "I already named him out there, you guys didn't pay attention? I'm kidding. No, I want to go watch the tape. You know what I mean? There's a lot to learn from for everybody and certainly the quarterback room, too." More: Vols' quarterback battle: 'Nobody's going to earn it, lose it day one'
