Jayden Daniels was an Arizona State football star and found big-time fame and a Heisman Trophy after he transferred to LSU. His time in Tempe was not without an occasional controversy, and now, the third-year Washington Commanders quarterback has found a fresh issue. Daniels — with help from his legal team — sent a cease-and-desist to LSU, according to ESPN, attempting to force the fine folks in Baton Rouge to retire his jersey No. 5. The statement: “Jayden made it clear that he did not want his number given to another player, and he believed his wishes would be respected. His Heisman Trophy-winning season and everything he accomplished on and off the field cemented his place in LSU history. To see his number given to another player is incredibly disappointing and feels like a failure to honor the significance of what Jayden accomplished at LSU.”
LSU coach Lane Kiffin, no stranger to controversy, told the current holder of the No. 5 jersey, sophomore D.J. Pickett, that he could wear that number. Daniels doesn't really need distractions, given his injury-plagued second season that followed a dynamic Rookie of the Year campaign in his first season at Washington. This season is seen by many as a "prove it" year for Daniels. He's still wearing No. 5 with the Commanders, so no problems there.
