Explained: Why FSG have agreed to sell Liverpool stake to 1892 Holdings as Bezos role clarified

On Friday, Liverpool FC owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) confirmed the sale of a minority stake in the club to 1892 Holdings, a consortium led and managed by Amit Bhatia and including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

A statement on liverpoolfc.com affirmed that FSG will continue to retain majority ownership and operational control of the club and didn’t disclose any details about the size or value of the stake, but according to sources with knowledge of the investment, it’s expected to be approximately 30% (The Athletic).

The proposed transaction has prompted LFC fan group Spirit of Shankly to seek transparent answers to multiple questions about the process, such as whether due diligence has been undertaken on the investors and whether this is part of plans for a future sale of the club as whole.

FSG to retain day-to-day control over Liverpool FC

A report from The Athletic clarified that FSG have agreed on the partnership with 1892 Holdings because they could see the benefit to their global operations, with Bhatia’s involvement expected to ‘open doors in Asia’ and Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin set to ‘assist in growing the club’s already strong brand’.

FSG will retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool FC, continuing to take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the club, and the Boston-based firm are ‘incredibly selective when it comes to giving up any of their control’

Should the investment go through, Bhatia will assume the role of vice-chairman and be joined on the club’s board by Elaine Saverin (wife of Eduardo) and Bryan Baum of K5 Sports. Sources with knowledge of the situation have indicated that Bezos won’t have a seat on the board.

Liverpool fans have raised legitimate concerns

Some may argue that this proposed transaction is perfect for Liverpool, as FSG will retain operational control while the investment would theorertically make the club even stronger financially and open up highly lucrative sponsorship avenues.

However, many Reds supporters have legitimate concerns about the involvement of Bezos in particular (he’s been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump’s U.S. presidency) and what decisions the consortium might take going forward.

LFC might have even greater financial muscle if 1892 Holdings ultimately take primary control of the club, but will their motives align with the deeply-held values of the fan base? Is there a legitimate worry that match-going fans could be priced out by capitalism-driven cost increases?

It’s no secret that FSG have been open to outside investment in Liverpool FC in recent years, and selling now would yield John Henry and co a mammoth profit on the £300m for which they purchased the club in 2010.

While the current owners have been far from perfect, at least the growth of LFC on their watch has been undeniable and they’ve taken fans’ opinions on board by reversing some unpopular decisions. For as long as they retain majority control at Anfield, we can rest assured that there are steady hands at the wheel.
